Upon arrival, they found a woman with fatal injuries who was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>The woman was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/local\/article261555902.html\">later identified<\/a> as Regan Gibbs, who was a goalkeeper at KU from 2015-2018. Marek was with her when authorities arrived, and he was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder. According to a report from the Kansas City Star, authorities believe that domestic violence played a role in the former soccer star\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are heartbroken about the loss of Regan Gibbs \ud83d\udc94<\/p>\n<p>We share our deepest condolences to Regan\u2019s family, friends and teammates.<\/p>\n<p>More information \u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9reH5e2hry\">https:\/\/t.co\/9reH5e2hry<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1id7golZHE\">pic.twitter.com\/1id7golZHE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kansas Soccer (@KUWSoccer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KUWSoccer\/status\/1526732399622729730?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 18, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Marek was initially held at the Douglas County jail on $1 million bond \u2014 the prosecutor argued that a high bail amount was warranted due to the \u201cexcessive brutality\u201d of the murder, and \u201cbecause the defendant was adamant that what he did was justified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials stated that Marek was the one who placed the 911 call, and that he informed law enforcement that God had instructed him to kill his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice have not released the cause of Gibbs\u2019 death pending the results of an autopsy,\u201d The Lawrence Times reported. \u201cBut Lawrence Police Chief Rich Lockhart said there was blunt force trauma involved. Marek called 911 Monday night and told dispatchers that God told him to kill his wife, Lockhart said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marek made his <a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencekstimes.com\/2022\/05\/17\/lpd-murder-update-dv\/\">first court appearance<\/a> on Monday, when he was formally charged with his wife\u2019s murder \u2014 and when asked if he would like to have an attorney provided to represent him, he replied simply: \u201cJesus Christ is my attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>KU soccer coach Mark Francis issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/kuathletics.com\/kansas-soccer-mourns-loss-of-former-student-athlete-regan-gibbs\/\">statement<\/a> upon learning of Gibbs\u2019 passing, saying, \u201cOur soccer program is heartbroken to hear about the tragic loss of Regan. She was a tremendous teammate and young woman, and touched so many during her time at Kansas. Regan will always be remembered for the impact she had both on and off the field. We share our condolences to her family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur KU family sends our love, support and prayers to Regan\u2019s family, friends and former teammates as we all mourn her loss,\u201d KU Athletic Director Travis Goff added.<\/p>\n<p>Gibbs, according to a GoFundMe page set up by her cousin Hannah Lewis, is survived by her mother and four sisters. \u201cRegan was only 25, a beautiful, kindhearted girl who loved Jesus and people.
