Discovery Upfront presentation Wednesday, the 42-year-old star and executive producer of the upcoming adult animated series, titled \u201cVelma,\u201d showed the audience an image of her character who is now South Asian, <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/tv\/mindy-kaling-teases-her-south-asian-velma-cartoon\/?utm_campaign=entertainmentweekly_entertainmentweekly&#038;utm_content=new&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_source=twitter.com&#038;utm_term=628530a22b6470000137ed48\">reported<\/a> Entertainment Weekly.<\/p>\n<p>Kaling\u2019s solo-series is reimagined from the popular 1969 cartoon \u201cScooby-Doo.\u201d On the show, it was Velma who was often the one who solved the mysteries and was definitely seen as the brains behind the rag-tag crew of kids that worked together to solve crazy mysteries, which consisted of Velma Dinkley, Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Shaggy Rogers,\u00a0and their pup Scooby-Doo.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Hopefully you noticed my Velma is South Asian,&#8221; the star and producer said at the Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront presentation Wednesday. &#8220;If people freak out about that, I don&#8217;t care.&#8221;  <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dQT1J4CVpE\">https:\/\/t.co\/dQT1J4CVpE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Entertainment Weekly (@EW) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EW\/status\/1526982226386243584?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 18, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The new show will not be that, and is being sold as a 10-episode adult animated series that will run on HBO Max. After Kaling introduced her character, she made a point to note what was different about her Velma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a dog can solve crimes,\u201d Kaling shared, then her Velma \u201ccan be brown,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2022\/05\/mindy-kaling-velma-hbo-max-controversy-1235027077\/\">reported<\/a> Deadline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully you noticed my Velma is South Asian,\u201d \u201cThe Mindy Project\u201d star told the crowd. \u201cIf people freak out about that, I don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with Kaling revealing her character, the actress also shared a NSFW image of the upcoming animated series that shows a character with some of their head missing and an animated person topless with the rest of their body covered in what appears to be bubbles.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the streaming service announced the project it described it as \u201can original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America\u2019s most beloved mystery solvers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/mindy-kalings-velma-will-be-east-asian-series-wont-have-scooby-doo\">WarnerMedia\u2019s Tom Ascheim<\/a>, president of Warner Bros.
