Although Bledsoe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wxyz.com\/news\/victim-in-detroit-nursing-home-assault-has-died-family-says\">died weeks later<\/a>, his death was not classified as a homicide. Charges were <a href=\"https:\/\/michigannewstime.com\/charges-of-assault-on-a-nursing-home-were-dropped-2\/16911\/\">reportedly dropped<\/a> because Hayden is mentally incompetent to stand trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe shouldn\u2019t be in jail,\u201d Hayden\u2019s father, Marty Hayden, told WXYZ, Detroit\u2019s ABC television affiliate. \u201cSo the system will let him down again. He will not be rehabilitated.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is a nursing home. Please someone explain why this is happening and unreported.  <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Dzs8QYykIv\">pic.twitter.com\/Dzs8QYykIv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 James Woods (@RealJamesWoods) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RealJamesWoods\/status\/1263561902686236672?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 21, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Hayden recorded the beating with his own cell phone, according to police. The video shows Bledsoe covered in blood as he lies helpless on the bed and being pummeled by Hayden, who repeatedly yells, \u201cGet the f*** off my bed!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nursing home staff raced in to help Bledsoe, Hayden said had fallen out of his bed, police later said. Hayden was arrested a week later, after police received several calls from citizens who saw the video on social media. Hayden, who police said had \u201cset up his cell phone\u201d in the room, had posted videos of the attack on social media. He was also accused of stealing Bledsoe\u2019s credit cards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-bdVaJa dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-2 hLMqRF\">Joely Pointer an employee at the nursing home, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/news\/local\/2021\/01\/11\/man-charged-with-beating-detroit-nursing-home-resident-headed-to-trial\/\">said in January, 2021<\/a>, that Bledsoe was left dazed after the attack, which left him with several broken ribs, fingers, and a broken jaw.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-bdVaJa dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-2 hLMqRF\">\u201cHe had a very large contusion to his head,\u201d she said. \u201cThere was blood. He was very confused and he could not give me a statement as to what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The elder Hayden blames social workers for putting his mentally ill son in a nursing home. Jaden Hayden, who had a history of violent behavior, was living in a group home in May of 2020, when he told his father he was \u201chearing voices,\u201d according to his father. He was sent to University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, where he was diagnosed with COVID-19 and inexplicably sent to the nursing home to recover.<\/p>\n<p>Pointer told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/news\/local\/2021\/01\/11\/man-charged-with-beating-detroit-nursing-home-resident-headed-to-trial\/\">ClickOnDetroit.com<\/a> last year that the nursing home had just opened a COVID unit, and that\u2019s why it had taken in Hayden.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, like former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and governors in New Jersey and Pennsylvania sent COVID patients to nursing homes during the early stages of the pandemic.
