He said the old entrance \u201cdisoriented\u201d tourists.<\/p>\n<div id=\"inline_cube_81513_wrapper\" class=\"ad_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ad_container width_100 bg-color_white flex flex_justify_center\">\n<div class=\"flex_basis\">\n<p><span class=\"ad-label font_normal font_open-sans color_grey_6 transform_uppercase\">Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1wxyvyl-0 grAgzi body-paragraph\">MTA officials said the stairway project was completed on budget \u2014 but the agency pays higher premiums for construction projects than any other transit agency in the world, an ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/marroninstitute.nyu.edu\/projects\/transit-costs-project\">study <\/a>from researchers at New York University\u2019s Marron Institute has found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1wxyvyl-0 grAgzi body-paragraph\">For example, the 1.6-mile extension of the Second Ave. Subway to 125th St. in East Harlem is projected to cost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/ny-second-avenue-subway-mta-project-federal-funding-trump-cuomo-20211219-zi42ibfqwnfkfl2lvm2digy5ky-story.html\">$6.3 billion<\/a>. That breaks down to $3.9 billion per mile, the highest cost per distance of any subway expansion on the planet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1wxyvyl-0 grAgzi body-paragraph\">A 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/ny-mta-audit-projects-exceed-costs-20191222-biwhrqjpojfvhffc27gav454ni-story.html\">audit <\/a>commissioned by the MTA found about 20% of the agency\u2019s construction projects run over budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1wxyvyl-0 grAgzi body-paragraph\">Near the new stairs is a new elevator that was paid for by the company Jamestown, which owns the 1 Times Square building above the station. That project included the extension of a hallway \u2014 also decorated with Cave\u2019s mosaics \u2014 between the Times Square and Bryant Park subway stations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1wxyvyl-0 grAgzi body-paragraph\">But unlike that larger project, the $30 million stairway to tourist heaven is more aesthetic than operational.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1wxyvyl-0 grAgzi body-paragraph\">\u201cNow we have a really first class entrance from the center of Broadway plaza,\u201d said Lieber. \u201cThe new canopy over the stairs was designed to evoke the Waterford crystals that are that ball that drops on New Year\u2019s Eve.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"inline_cube_81514_wrapper\" class=\"ad_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ad_container width_100 bg-color_white flex flex_justify_center\">\n<div class=\"flex_basis\">\n<p><span class=\"ad-label font_normal font_open-sans color_grey_6 transform_uppercase\">Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1wxyvyl-0 grAgzi body-paragraph\">The MTA has a long history of spending big bucks to gussy up busy subway stations. The agency in 2016, under the direction of former Gov.
