Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) conceded his bid for reelection on Tuesday, losing the Republican primary to GOP state Sen. Chuck Edwards.<\/p>\n<p>Cawthorn\u2019s campaign was buffeted in recent weeks by a number of leaks about his personal behavior prior to holding office, including the leak of a nude video. Cawthorn called Edwards to concede defeat late Tuesday after results <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/05\/17\/us\/elections\/results-north-carolina.html\">showed<\/a> him trailing by about two points with almost all precincts reporting.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Madison Cawthorn has conceded his North Carolina Congressional primary to state Sen. Chuck Edwards, campaign spokesman Luke Ball tells my colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DianneG?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DianneG<\/a>. Trump endorsed Cawthorn last year, and reupped his support for the incumbent on Monday after Cawthorn had weathered weeks of negative press about his personal character.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Madison was first elected to Congress, he did a great job,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/news\/campaign\/3489925-trump-backing-cawthorn-despite-lawmakers-foolish-mistakes\/\">said<\/a> in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. \u201cRecently, he made some foolish mistakes, which I don\u2019t believe he\u2019ll make again\u2026let\u2019s give Madison a second chance!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of May less than two weeks before the primary, a nude video of a man believed to be Cawthorn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/nude-video-surfaces-of-madison-cawthorn-with-a-friend-lawmaker-says-blackmail-wont-win\">surfaced<\/a> online. The video purports to show a naked Cawthorn in bed drag his groin over another man\u2019s head and begin thrusting. The 26-year-old lawmaker appeared to confirm the video\u2019s veracity while dismissing it as \u201cblackmail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA new hit against me just dropped,\u201d he said in a tweet. \u201cYears ago, in this video, I was being crass with a friend, trying to be funny. We were acting foolish, and joking. That\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m NOT backing down. I told you there would be a drip drip campaign. Blackmail won\u2019t win.
