Cameron admitted that he was like others, but that all of his \u201cstereotypes and misconceptions\u201d of what it meant to homeschool \u201cjust exploded\u201d as he discovered that homeschooling meant \u201ckids can learn by their learning style\u201d and \u201cget a fantastic education\u201d at the same time. So, they decided to pull their kids out, calling it the \u201cbest decision\u201d they made.<\/p>\n<p>And he\u2019s not alone \u2014 an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/covid-business-health-buffalo-education-d37f4f1d12e57b72e5ddf67d4f897d9a\">Associated Press<\/a> article in April noted that \u201cin\u00a018 states that shared data through the current school year, the number of homeschooling students increased by 63% in the 2020-2021 school year, then fell by only 17% in the 2021-2022 school year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the pandemic, the number of kids in the United States who were homeschooled totaled 3%, per the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cFireproof\u201d star said the number one reason parents said they decided to pull their kids from public school was that \u201cthey were horrified at the breach of trust\u201d from their public education.<\/p>\n<p>The movie focuses on twenty families \u201cwho live all over the country in urban areas, rural areas,\u201d etc., and shows how \u201cthe world has become their classroom,\u201d highlighting things like how \u201ckids are learning to start businesses because their parents are seeing the opportunity for freedom\u201d in this kind of learning environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big idea is that if you believe God gave your children to you, then you have the opportunity to shape their hearts and minds,\u201d Kirk shared when asked about parents who worry whether they will have time for this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou [the parent] have the opportunity to tailor your kid\u2019s education and what to instill, the knowledge, etc. \u2026 It\u2019s not one size fits all,\u201d he added. \u201cWho does that is the public education system. Even good teachers struggle with this. Both in the way they teach the kids and what they teach the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey [parents] just need to know you\u2019re not beholden to this crazy schedule of 8 hours of school,\u201d Cameron continued. \u00a0\u201cThe way it is now for kids, you learn to hate learning, but by experiencing the world (when it comes to things like english, math, history) you learn to love learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cGrowing Pains\u201d star said he hopes the movie will help those who feel \u201cthey are trapped in public school\u201d and feel they have no way out see \u201cthere\u2019s many different ways\u201d to make homeschooling a reality for their family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want those parents to see I am not a prisoner in a system I am not happy with,\u201d Cameron explained. \u201cAnd to see there\u2019s another way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the documentary shares how, as he explained that there \u201care networks and co-ops in the homeschool community\u201d along with curriculums from professional educators. The film also deals with the \u201cfreedom and the opportunity\u201d this gives families, along with answering the \u201cmost commonly asked questions\u201d about homeschooling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ins and outs,\u201d he added. \u201cThe how tos,\u201d and all the way up to the \u201chigher education level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At one point, the actor admitted \u201chomeschool is not for everyone\u201d and that \u201cthe point of this movie\u201d is showing how \u201cparents are taking back the leadership role\u201d when it comes to their child\u2019s education.<\/p>\n<p>In his film, people learn about how one family went from encouraging their kids\u2019 school to require parent involvement when it comes to explicit material to them reading what the material was and realizing that public school wasn\u2019t for them.<\/p>\n<p>Another story deals with a family who has a child with special needs. He said the public school they were a part of told them how their child would be educated. They got one vote and then the school, the teacher, and the special needs instructor got to vote, and he said \u201cthey were out-voted three to one.\u201d The parents came to realize just because \u201cthey didn\u2019t have a credential\u201d in teaching special needs didn\u2019t mean they weren\u2019t qualified to teach their own child \u2014 which is exactly what they decided to do, and he said their child is doing great.<\/p>\n<p>We also talked about a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/opinion\/msnbc-opinion\/schools-are-under-attack-america-s-religious-right-n1295340?cid=sm_npd_ms_tw_ma\">MSNBC<\/a>\u00a0column, titled \u201cHow the conservative Christian right is hijacking homeschooling. The conservative Christian right has been working hard to dismantle public schooling for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The op-ed argued people who partake in homeschooling are actually helping to end public school and re-segregate society \u2014 even if they\u2019re doing it unknowingly, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/add-homeschooling-to-list-of-things-the-left-says-is-racist\">reported<\/a>\u00a0previously by The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>MSNBC <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MSNBC\/status\/1524876338607316999?s=20&#038;t=wlXYPt1Wv0UVjNJY5GPI2Q\">tweeted<\/a>, \u201cIt may seem harmless, but the insidious racism of the American religious right\u2019s obsession with homeschooling speaks volumes,\u201d while linking to the article written by University of Pennsylvania Professor Anthea Butler.<\/p>\n<p>Cameron said that in the piece, the author \u201chighlighted his movie\u201d and claimed the homeschool documentary is \u201call about racism, that we are anti-education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHomeschool parents are not defending a terminal disease. We are pro-faith, pro-family, pro-education,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Homeschool Awakening\u201d will be in theaters for two days only, June 13 and 14.
