In addition, U.S. oil corporation Chevron will be allowed to enter into negotiations with Venezuelan state-owned firm PDVSA over potential continued operations in the South American oil-rich nation.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the deal, Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro agreed to open talks with opposition leader Juan Guaid\u00f3, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/talks-between-venezuelas-maduro-opposition-expected-us-easing-some-restrictions-2022-05-17\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The U.S. agreed to lift some sanctions] on the basis of ambitious, concrete and irreversible outcomes that empower the Venezuelan people to determine the future in their country through democratic elections,\u201d one official told CNN. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/07\/gasoline-prices-all-time-high-russia-white-house\/\">(RELATED: Gas Prices Hit All-Time High As White House Turns To Dictators For Help)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the U.S. has pursued an aggressive sanctions regime against Venezuela for more than 15 years, in 2019 the Trump administration imposed a fresh swath of restrictions on the South American nation\u2019s oil industry to renew pressure on Maduro, a 2021 report from the Congressional Research Service <a href=\"https:\/\/sgp.fas.org\/crs\/row\/IF10715.pdf\">showed<\/a>. The U.S. imported about 462,000 barrels of oil per day from Venezuela in 2018, and it imported 670,000 barrels per day from Russia in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Chevron has recently lobbied the federal government to remove the sanctions, <a href=\"https:\/\/lda.senate.gov\/filings\/public\/filing\/6cc1224a-0282-45da-9487-efff52e83e6f\/print\/\">according<\/a> to Senate disclosures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur experience buying Russian energy should have taught President Biden that buying energy from tyrants is a dangerous proposition,\u201d Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member John Barrasso said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet President Biden continues to reward our enemies by waiving sanctions while his administration does its best to kill American energy production. Funding despots isn\u2019t in the national interest. Supporting American energy is,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela consistently ranks as one of the least \u201cfree\u201d countries in the world, <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/country\/venezuela\/freedom-world\/2021\">according<\/a> to Freedom House.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Biden administration has increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/16\/joe-biden-federal-court-ruling-oil-drilling-lease-sales\/\">moved to restrict<\/a> further domestic oil and gas production. The Department of the Interior <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/12\/joe-biden-administration-oil-gas-lease-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">canceled<\/a> the three remaining federal offshore oil and gas lease sales last week and dramatically <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/15\/joe-biden-interior-department-oil-gas-drilling\/\">scaled back<\/a> the federal onshore program in April.<\/p>\n<p>The average price of gasoline reached an all-time record $4.52 a gallon on Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">according<\/a> to AAA data.<\/p>\n<p>The White House didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
