Law would simply reflect whatever person or group was best able to influence the court.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in danger of destroying the institutions that are required for a civil society,\u201d Thomas warned in his talk.\u00a0\u201cYou can\u2019t have a civil society, a free society without a stable legal system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the leak, court members experienced relationships bonded by the trust to preserve the integrity of the law. Thomas said members of the court would never have imagined that a draft could be leaked. That belief was broken with the leak, along with the trust in the court.\u00a0This erodes social trust and ultimately the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you lose that trust, especially in the institution that I\u2019m in, it changes the institution fundamentally,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cYou begin to look over your shoulder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Court members now must be concerned about those they work with \u201cwho would have an attitude to leak docs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thomas also discussed Soviet dissenter Alexander Solzhenitsyn\u2019s essay, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solzhenitsyncenter.org\/live-not-by-lies\">Live Not by Lies<\/a>.\u201d He said our nation has allowed people to force others to live by lies. He admonished his audience to instead refuse to tell lies or repeat other people\u2019s lies. <\/p>\n<p>Tolerating and refusing to stand against lies lets those untruths grow wings, he noted.
