It doesn\u2019t exist outside of Joe Biden\u2019s TelePrompter.<\/p>\n<p>To that claim, leftists would surely point to news reports and declarations by the U.S. Justice Department and Homeland Security. The New York Times has been all over it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTop law enforcement officials say the biggest domestic terror threat comes from white supremacists.\u201d\u2014 New York Times, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/12\/us\/politics\/domestic-terror-white-supremacists.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">June 15, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHomeland Security Dept. Affirms Threat of White Supremacy After Years of Prodding.\u201d\u2014New York Times, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/01\/us\/politics\/white-supremacy-homeland-security.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oct. 1, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Grave Threats of White Supremacy and Far-Right Extremism.\u201d\u2014New York Times, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/02\/22\/opinion\/christopher-hasson-extremism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Feb. 22, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even under Donald Trump\u2014especially under Donald Trump\u2014the permanent bureaucracy had been hyperventilating about \u201cwhite supremacy\u201d and the existential threat it supposedly represented to every American, and even democracy itself.<\/p>\n<p>Strangely enough, though, there isn\u2019t a ton of publicly available government data on the topic. More often than not, a government agency or official makes an assertion about white supremacists on a rampage and we\u2019re just supposed to take it as fact without hearing any specifics. <\/p>\n<p>For a threat so pervasive, prolific, and prominent, wouldn\u2019t you expect there to be a nearly unlimited body of work readily available for the public to consume and understand just how grave it is?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not there. You\u2019re supposed to believe it anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Sorry, government, but would you mind showing me your work on this thing you\u2019re telling me is imminently deadly?<\/p>\n<p><em>Shut your racist mouth!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the final months of Trump\u2019s term, Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/2020_10_06_homeland-threat-assessment.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a report<\/a> titled \u201cHomeland Threat Assessment.\u201d In that report, Wolf said he was \u201cparticularly concerned about white supremacist violent extremists who have been exceptionally lethal in their abhorrent, targeted attacks in recent years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report said that domestic violent extremists, \u201cspecifically white supremacist extremists (WSEs)\u201d were and would continue to be \u201cthe most persistent and lethal threat in the Homeland.\u201d It made all kinds of claims about \u201cWSEs\u201d: that they have \u201cdemonstrated longstanding intent to target racial and religious minorities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, politicians, and those they believe promote multi-culturalism and globalization\u201d; and \u201chave conducted more lethal attacks in the United States than any other DVE (domestic violent extremist) movement\u201d; and \u201chave engaged in outreach and networking opportunities abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was even a tally alleging that nearly 40 people had been killed in attacks perpetrated by \u201cWSEs\u201d from 2018 and 2019. \u201cWSEs conducted half of all lethal attacks (8 of 16), resulting in the majority of deaths (39 of 48),\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>But there was a problem with the report. There were precisely zero citations showing where the Department of Homeland Security had derived its conclusions\u2014no news articles or academic papers. Just an assurance by the acting secretary, who was \u201cparticularly concerned about white supremacist violent extremists\u201d of late.<\/p>\n<p>Hmm \u2014 might there be information elsewhere? A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/US%20White%20Supremacist%20Extremists_CVE%20Task%20Force_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">document<\/a> published the previous year by the same department said the agency looked at the years from 2000 to mid-2016 and counted \u201c28 attacks in the United States committed by WSEs, which collectively resulted in 51 fatalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That factoid came with a citation, so that\u2019s good. But this was the corresponding footnote: \u201cBased on a review of US Government information, law enforcement reporting, and open source.\u201d There was no link to specific incidents or verifiable data. There was no cross reference. That wouldn\u2019t fly in a high school English paper, but the feds apparently think they\u2019re above having to back up their wild claims with any actual evidence.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more publicly available information about the government spending millions of dollars to investigate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/federal-eye\/wp\/2014\/09\/02\/why-the-federal-government-spent-3-million-to-study-lesbian-obesity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prevalence of obesity in lesbians<\/a> than there is about an allegedly serious and fatal threat we\u2019re facing from white supremacists.<\/p>\n<p>What about at the state level? In 2019, Democrat New Jersey Gov. Philip Murphy\u2019s administration published <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/54d79f88e4b0db3478a04405\/t\/5cb0e973419202ecc51ff848\/1555097973989\/Domestic+Terrorism+in+2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a report<\/a> on individual episodes of \u201cdomestic terrorism\u201d that purportedly took place across the nation throughout the previous year. To the department\u2019s credit, it was highly transparent about what it was counting as an incident of \u201cterrorism,\u201d including names, dates, and locations of the perpetrators.<\/p>\n<p>There were, the report said, a total of 32 \u201cdomestic terrorist attacks, disrupted plots, threats of violence, and weapons stockpiling by individuals with a radical political or social agenda.\u201d Of that 32, the office said the overwhelming majority, 25, were carried out by white supremacists.<\/p>\n<p>The report listed each individual incident of white supremacist-linked terrorism, with the name of the perpetrator, his age, and the location of the incident, but without references to where it drew the data. Additional information requires looking up each episode on your own.<\/p>\n<p>One of the incidents involved Benjamin Morro, a 28-year-old Wisconsin man who accidentally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2018\/04\/13\/wisconsin-man-who-blew-himself-up-might-have-been-white-supremacist-making-isis-style-bombs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killed himself<\/a> by mishandling explosives in his apartment. No motive has ever been established as to why Morro had the combustible items but law enforcement claimed to have found \u201cwhite supremacist material,\u201d i.e., literature in pamphlets or books, in his home.<\/p>\n<p>Is a dummy who accidentally blows himself up what comes to mind when you hear the phrase \u201cwhite supremacist terrorist attack\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Another one involved Ronnie Wilson, a 32-year-old Tennessee man who was charged with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knoxnews.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2019\/05\/09\/white-supremacist-convicted-attempted-murder-shooting-knox-policeman-ronnie-wilson-jay-williams\/1158041001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shooting a cop<\/a> during a traffic stop. Wilson was allegedly a member of the white supremacist gang Aryan Nations, but the officer he shot was also white.<\/p>\n<p>When a white man shoots another white man, is that what comes to mind when you hear the phrase \u201cwhite supremacist terrorist attack\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>One other incident involved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldtimesonline.com\/story\/news\/local\/2018\/06\/01\/man-arrested-downtown-accused-of-assault-racial-slurs\/46997893\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a homeless man<\/a> who was yelling racial epithets in public. (To which I ask, has anyone seen or heard from Chris Matthews lately?)<\/p>\n<p>Yet another pertained to a black man who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnj.com\/story\/news\/2019\/07\/22\/tennessee-man-sentenced-murfreesboro-housemates-fiery-death\/1777753001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">burned alive<\/a> by his white housemate. The two of them lived at Frazier Young Supportive Living, a residence in Tennessee for the mentally impaired. <\/p>\n<p>A homeless man and a literal mental patient. Is that what comes to mind when you hear the phrase \u201cwhite supremacist terrorist attacks\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>If those four incidents don\u2019t fill you with fear that white supremacists lurk in the shadows to commit random acts of violence, I don\u2019t know what to tell you. You should be deathly afraid!<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, not all of the entries in the New Jersey government\u2019s report are a reach. A few appear to be legitimate, racially motivated attacks on ethnic minorities.<\/p>\n<p>One involved Natasha Bowers, a 33-year-old woman who, along with five other skinheads, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtae.com\/article\/police-fbi-probe-suspected-white-supremacist-attack-on-dj\/25463630#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beat up a black man<\/a> in the back of a bar in Pennsylvania. But the odd thing about that solitary episode is that it was counted by the report as six separate attacks, one for each of the attackers charged by police.<\/p>\n<p>The authors of the report did the same thing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldnet.com\/news\/charges-pending-as-fbi-investigates-racist-lynnwood-beating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the assault of a black man<\/a> at a bar in Washington state. Eight attackers identified by law enforcement were believed to be affiliated with the Aryan Brotherhood. Each suspect was listed in the report as an individual \u201cwhite supremacist attack,\u201d even though there was only one incident.<\/p>\n<p>This would be like saying we had 19 separate September 11s because that\u2019s the number of hijackers who participated. No, we had just the one carried out by multiple people. That more than one attacker was involved doesn\u2019t mean we count each one as an individual event.<\/p>\n<p>To recap: of the 25 attacks labeled in the New Jersey government\u2019s report as white supremacy, 14 were related to only two separate incidents. One of them involved a man who accidentally killed himself, another was perpetrated by a homeless guy, and yet another was committed by a mental patient in a home for the intellectually disabled. That brings the total attacks in 2018 down to more like eight\u2014across our entire nation of 330 million people.<\/p>\n<p>Fewer than ten \u201cwhite supremacy\u201d attacks doesn\u2019t exactly sound like something the FBI should be busying itself with. The numbers on \u201cwhite supremacy\u201d couldn\u2019t have been more padded if they were on their period.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the president is scheduled to visit Buffalo this week, where he will most certainly talk up white supremacy as an all-consuming force that can only be beaten back by voting for more Democrats.
