While scientists were quick to debunk claims of otherworldly architecture, Twitter users had a blast with the picture.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u201cI left the <\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">door<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> open at our secret base on <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\"><a class=\"css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1cvl2hr r-1loqt21 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Mars?src=hashtag_click\">#Mars<\/a>,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AntonioParis\/status\/1524707866355060737?s=20&#038;t=CX77XOAf1iOrwAfEnLv51w\">tweeted on user<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u201cOh, hey, look, that\u2019s totally a little <\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">doorway<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> for little aliens that totally exist, like, on <\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Mars<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">!\u201d tweeted <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kevinmgill\/status\/1524485888687833089?s=20&#038;t=kIVItGw902EgjGcpcYLL5A\">another<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>NASA has released no official statement about the image, perhaps preferring to let earthlings speculate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">The image was captured May 7 by the rover\u2019s Mastcam while it <a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 kVnoAv js_link\" href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/msl\/mission\/where-is-the-rover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ga=\"[[\" Embedded Url>ascended Mount Sharp<\/a>. The process puts sandstone under pressure, which causes it to fracture in different places.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">\u201cThe fractures we see in this area are generally vertical,\u201d he told the outlet.\u00a0\u201cI think what we have here [is] either two vertical fractures, where the middle piece has been removed, or one vertical fracture, and the blocks have moved apart a little bit,\u201d Vasavada said.<\/p>\n<p>By\u00a0<u><span><span>zooming<\/span><\/span><a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gigapan.com\/gigapans\/229311\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-url=\"http:\/\/www.gigapan.com\/gigapans\/229311\" data-component-tracked=\"1\">\u00a0in<\/a><\/u>, viewers can see that what looks like a cave is really just a shallow area where a wedge of rock has fallen away to create the illusion. It is reminiscent of Cydonia, the so-called \u201cFace on Mars\u201d that fascinated humans in the 1970s, but turned out to be just a hill on the surface of the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Curiosity has been tooling around Mars since 2012, when it landed in what is known as the Gale Crater.
