However, Democrats and the media have long celebrated the demographic and electoral changes brought about through immigration, and the media has widely acknowledged this Democratic strategy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">NEW w\/<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/karenyourish?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@karenyourish<\/a>: For extremists like the Buffalo killer, \u201creplacement\u201d justifies violence. For some right-wing pols and media personalities, variations on the theme bring clout, audiences, retweets and donations.<br \/>How replacement went mainstream. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HdUstSNW2d\">https:\/\/t.co\/HdUstSNW2d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nick Confessore (@nickconfessore) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nickconfessore\/status\/1526013500274925568?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 16, 2022<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/15\/us\/replacement-theory-shooting-tucker-carlson.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called<\/a> \u201creplacement theory\u201d racist in a Sunday article which blamed Tucker Carlson for promoting the idea. A Rolling Stone commentary article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/political-commentary\/buffalo-shooter-white-supremacist-great-replacement-donald-trump-1353509\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> the theory was part of an extremist ideology controlling the GOP and that the shooter was a \u201cmainstream Republican,\u201d and the Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/great-white-replacement-theory-explainer-c86f309f02cd14062f301ce6b9228e33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cited<\/a> an expert who said the idea that Democrats wanted to encourage migration from Latin America to bring in more Democratic voters was baseless.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous media outlets and Democratic strategists have acknowledged that taking advantage of increasingly non-white demographics is a key Democratic strategy.<\/p>\n<p>A 1990 article in Time Magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/subscriber\/article\/0,33009,969770,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">predicted<\/a> that white Americans would soon become a minority group, due in large part to immigration, and that this change would reshape society and politics.<\/p>\n<p>The liberal think tank Center for American Progress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/immigration-is-changing-the-political-landscape-in-key-states\/\">said<\/a> in 2013 that \u201c[s]upporting real immigration reform that contains a pathway to citizenship for our nation\u2019s 11 million undocumented immigrants is the only way to maintain electoral strength in the future.\u201d<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/15\/one-dead-several-injured-laguna-woods-california-church-shooting\/\">(RELATED: One Dead, Several Injured At Laguna Woods Church Shooting)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Salon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2008\/11\/13\/new_mexico_6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a> in 2008 that New Mexico\u2019s growing Hispanic population had helped make the state solidly blue and speculated that the growing proportion of Hispanic voters in various swing states could create a permanent Democratic majority and land a Democrat in the White House in every presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>A 2020 New York Times piece <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/10\/22\/us\/politics\/trump-voters-demographics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">titled<\/a> \u201cThe Relentless Shrinking of Trump\u2019s Base\u201d cited a decline in white voters without college degrees to suggest that Donald Trump would lose to Joe Biden in 2020, noting that as aging drove down the white population, the proportion of minority voters continued to grow.<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2008-nov-09-na-assess9-story.html\">predicted<\/a> that Democrats would gain power in historically conservative states as their populations grew less white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA multiethnic bloc of Latinos, blacks, young people and suburban whites helped to broaden the party\u2019s reach Tuesday well beyond its traditional base in the Northeast and the West Coast \u2014 carrying Barack Obama into the White House and expanding the party\u2019s majorities in Congress,\u201d the article read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat new formula was evident in state exit polls and county-level election results showing that Democrats scored gains from a voting base that is growing progressively less white than the population that helped forge Republican advantages in past elections,\u201d the article said. \u201cIn state after state, from GOP strongholds like North Carolina, Indiana and Colorado, minorities made up a larger share of the vote than in the past, and in each case they helped turn states from red to blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democratic politicians have celebrated demographic shifts in which white Americans make up a smaller proportion of the population and explicitly recognized it as a key to electoral victories.<\/p>\n<p>Then-Democratic San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VjHlc_HdouM\">said<\/a> in 2008 that demographic changes driven by immigration would turn Texas blue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTexas is a very, very Republican state, but some people say the demographics are changing and the demographics alone will make it that it won\u2019t be so Republican next time around,\u201d host Bob Schieffer told Castro on CBC\u2019s Face The Nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a couple of presidential cycles, you\u2019ll be on election night. You\u2019ll be announcing that we\u2019re calling the 38 electoral votes of Texas for the Democratic nominee for president. It\u2019s changing. It\u2019s going to become a purple state, and then a blue state, because of the demographics, because of the population growth of folks from outside of Texas,\u201d Castro responded.<\/p>\n<p>A 2002 Washington Post article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/politics\/2002\/03\/14\/democrats-dream-of-gains-in-texas\/a5d8a774-0b88-4303-95f8-979eb6cb73d8\/\">discussed<\/a> how demographic changes in Texas could impact future elections, noting how Democrats would benefit from white people making up a smaller proportion of the electorate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry Cisneros, a former U.S. secretary of housing and development who supports Kirk, said the potential Democratic ticket represents \u2018the future of Texas\u2019 and a \u2018precursor of what much of American politics will be in the future\u2019 as demographic changes reduce the strength of the white vote in many populous states,\u201d the article said.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic officials have seized on Texas despite its deep conservative roots because of the state\u2019s racial and ethnic diversity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2013\/01\/democrats-launch-plan-to-turn-texas-blue-086651\">according<\/a> to a 2013 Politico article, viewing it as a potential Democratic stronghold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats have eyed Texas longingly for years, watching as the Republican bastion has transformed into a majority-minority state. The 2010 census found that 38 percent of Texans identified themselves as Latino or Hispanic; just under 45 percent were non-Hispanic whites,\u201d the article said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Democrats can count on Hispanics to deliver the nine states, including those two, where their population is at or exceeds the national average, then the party would have a formidable advantage in every presidential election. Combined, those states represent 212 Electoral College votes.
