Lightfoot said she would sign an executive order moving the current 11 p.m. weekend curfew back by one hour.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;In Chicago, right now, the curfew for young people is 11 p.m. on the weekend. Today, I&#8217;m signing an Executive Order to move that curfew back to 10 p.m.&#8221; \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chicagosmayor?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@chicagosmayor<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ryan Johnson (@Ryan_Johnson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ryan_Johnson\/status\/1526215438610231296?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 16, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cNo, we don\u2019t want to arrest children. But if we have to, we will, if they\u2019re breaking the law,\u201d the mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/city-hall\/2022\/5\/16\/23075013\/chicago-citywide-weekend-curfew-10-pm-millennium-park-bean-lightfoot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> during the morning news conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy interest is not in rounding up young people and throwing them in the back of a wagon. Lightfoot (@chicagosmayor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chicagosmayor\/status\/1526208396151619584?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 16, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhat I want to do is make sure to reassure the public that our downtown is safe and we are taking these specific steps to make sure that our downtown remains safe,\u201d the mayor said.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Lightfoot provided a lengthy statement following the shooting death of a teenager at Millennium Park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTragically, a young person \u2014 a teenager \u2014 lost his life last night in Millennium Park. I suspect an overwhelming majority of the youth who were in the Park were there to have a good time and enjoy a summer evening. But the scene devolved into one of chaos and unnecessary violence,\u201d Lightfoot <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ryan_Johnson\/status\/1525931156109139970\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe, as a City, can not allow any of our public spaces to become platforms for danger. Anyone coming into our public spaces should expect to enjoy them peacefully and must respect and exhibit basic community norms of decency,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Lightfoot also made headlines last month when the Chicago Police Department announced that 57% of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/chicago-police-say-57-of-carjackings-committed-by-juveniles-chicago-mayor-argues-problems-come-because-youths-do-not-feel-loved\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carjacking suspects<\/a> in 2022 were juveniles. The mayor told young people at a town hall gathering devoted to public safety, \u201cthere are too many young people in this room who do not feel loved, too many, and we\u2019ve got to change that around if we\u2019re going to change around the trajectory of their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mayor said Chicago cannot \u2018arrest ourselves\u2019 out of public safety problems,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox32chicago.com\/news\/as-chicago-police-say-57-of-carjacking-suspects-are-juveniles-lightfoot-says-youth-feel-unloved\">Fox 32<\/a>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n<p>Crime has not been the only concern highlighted by Lightfoot in recent weeks. Last week, the Chicago mayor called for a \u201ccall to arms\u201d over a leaked Supreme Court draft about abortion rights, tweeting, \u201cTo my friends in the LGBTQ+ community\u2014the Supreme Court is coming for us next.
