We will have to do this with Jews and Germans around the table. The end of the discussion and the negotiation will be set by Jews and Germans. But it will not be done in denial, nor in exclusion of each other, nor even in humiliation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I suspect most people would agree that the proposal is preposterous, obscene, and doomed to failure. How could Adolf Hitler and a representative of the Jewish community possibly talk about anything? Hitler is determined to annihilate Jews, and Jews want to survive. A meeting of the minds is impossible under such zero-sum conditions.\n<\/p>\n<p>Replace Jews with Ukraine and Germans with Russia, and you\u2019ll get the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2022\/05\/09\/macron-warns-against-humiliating-russia-over-war-in-ukraine\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2022\/05\/09\/macron-warns-against-humiliating-russia-over-war-in-ukraine&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1652531001258000&#038;usg=AOvVaw1lptrRyh_fbVxHP_9hGorT\">statement<\/a>\u00a0made by French President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/04\/emmanuel-macron-wins-big-but-should-we-really-celebrate\/\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a> in Strasbourg on May 9. Although Russia\u2019s ongoing genocide in Ukraine is nowhere nearly as destructive as the Holocaust\u2014after all, the war has been going on for only three months\u2014the logic of the negotiation is identical in both cases. Just as Jews could negotiate with Germans only after the latter\u2019s defeat, apology, and renunciation of anti-Semitism and Nazism, so too Ukraine can negotiate with Russia only after its defeat, apology, and renunciation of anti-Ukrainianism and Nazism.\n<\/p>\n<p>Until that happens, Putin\u2019s Russia will remain a rogue fascist state committed to destroying Ukraine and Ukrainians and expanding its empire to all the nations controlled by Soviet Russia. As a deputy of the Moscow city council <a href=\"http:\/\/windowoneurasia2.blogspot.com\/2022\/05\/besides-ukraine-russia-must-de-nazify.html\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/windowoneurasia2.blogspot.com\/2022\/05\/besides-ukraine-russia-must-de-nazify.html&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1652531001258000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2OekCgvq5tWIAuraqDw_qI\">recently said<\/a>, Russia must \u201cde-Nazify\u201d Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Moldova, and Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n<p>Russian policymakers have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/national-security\/3263276-putin-says-im-a-nazi-and-medvedev-says-i-dont-exist\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/national-security\/3263276-putin-says-im-a-nazi-and-medvedev-says-i-dont-exist\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1652531001258000&#038;usg=AOvVaw1l1QYc84J5re40-EtbIN7i\">repeatedly said<\/a>\u00a0that Ukraine is an artificial construct\u00a0and that Ukrainians don\u2019t exist. A Duma deputy has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/glavcomua\/9479\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/t.me\/glavcomua\/9479&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1652531001258000&#038;usg=AOvVaw1oJkt7cMm3Jw1RKGBXuh5O\">declared<\/a> that \u201cthe very notion of Ukraine should not exist in the future.\u201d Neither should \u201cthe notion of Ukrainian.\u201d He says his views are \u201cradical,\u201d when in fact, they\u2019re mainstream in today\u2019s Russia. Thus, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/windowoneurasia2.blogspot.com\/2022\/05\/prosvescheniye-erases-ukraine-from.html\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/windowoneurasia2.blogspot.com\/2022\/05\/prosvescheniye-erases-ukraine-from.html&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1652531001258000&#038;usg=AOvVaw1LC5s_BzjC6aABqGzvkfor\">Enlightenment<\/a>\u00a0\u201ceducational publishing house \u2026 has ordered its employees to drop as many references to Ukraine and Kyiv from the texts because in the words of one editor, \u2018we must make it look as if Ukraine does not exist\u2019.\u201d And, a few weeks ago, one Russian publicist proposed a detailed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/world-news\/europe\/russia-s-chilling-manifesto-for-genocide-in-ukraine-1.10723250\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/world-news\/europe\/russia-s-chilling-manifesto-for-genocide-in-ukraine-1.10723250&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1652531001258000&#038;usg=AOvVaw3wsFMN9EUKPQyd0rkVeMg3\">blueprint<\/a>\u00a0of the Ukrainian nation\u2019s extermination.\n<\/p>\n<p>Russian soldiers have killed, raped, and looted with abandon, committing multiple war crimes in the process. At the same time, Russians have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/russian-forces-destroyed-nearly-200-ukrainian-cultural-heritage-sites-president-zelensky-says-2112178\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/russian-forces-destroyed-nearly-200-ukrainian-cultural-heritage-sites-president-zelensky-says-2112178&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1652531001258000&#038;usg=AOvVaw3i4uK3l1Qf9ft_rTWQ0y3G\">destroyed<\/a>\u00a0and looted almost 200 Ukrainian cultural heritage sites. Just two examples: A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/ukraine-culture-destroyed-skovoroda-museum\/index.html\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/ukraine-culture-destroyed-skovoroda-museum\/index.html&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1652531001258000&#038;usg=AOvVaw0ZGpPI2vj2OPVCwYCIfbTl\">museum<\/a>\u00a0dedicated to the 18<sup>th<\/sup>-century Ukrainian philosopher, Hryhory Skovoroda, was shelled in early May; a few days later, a cache of ancient Scythian gold jewelry and artifacts was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/russian-invaders-steal-scythian-gold-170400470.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/russian-invaders-steal-scythian-gold-170400470.html?fr%3Dsycsrp_catchall&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1652531001258000&#038;usg=AOvVaw12cC-Fv6LPiUKDEnZj-j-S\">stolen<\/a>\u00a0from a museum in Melitopil.<\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of Ukrainian civilians have been killed in Mariupil; thousands more have died in other Ukrainian villages, towns, and cities. Hundreds of thousands have been \u201cethnically cleansed\u201d and forcibly deported to Russia. Thousands of children have been kidnapped.\n<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s actions today are little different from its actions in the early 1930s, when Moscow launched an anti-Ukrainian campaign recognized as genocide by Rafael Lemkin, the Polish-Jewish scholar who coined the term. Then as now, Moscow\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/history.org.ua\/LiberUA\/RaphaelLemkin_1953\/RaphaelLemkin_1953.pdf\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/history.org.ua\/LiberUA\/RaphaelLemkin_1953\/RaphaelLemkin_1953.pdf&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1652531001258000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2yFJc4gRYAEjkqsP2biGsP\">aimed to destroy<\/a>\u00a0Ukrainians physically as well as their \u201ctradition, folk lore and music, the national language and literature, the national spirit.\u201d Then as now, if Moscow\u2019s plans succeed, \u201cUkraine will be as dead\u201d\u2014to quote Lemkin\u2014\u201das if every Ukrainian were killed, for it will have lost that part of it which has kept and developed its culture, its beliefs, its common ideas, which have guided it and given it a soul, which, in short, made it a nation rather than a mass of people.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Given Putin Russia\u2019s clearly genocidal aims in Ukraine, just what are Ukrainians and Russians supposed to talk about? Indeed, what could President Macron or any of his Western counterparts talk about with Putin? About the numbers of Ukrainians he should kill? About the number of missiles he should rain down on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/04\/putin-shows-no-mercy-in-ukraine-attack-kyiv-with-brutal-missile-strike\/\">Ukrainian cities<\/a>? About the pace of the genocide? About the construction of ghettos?\n<\/p>\n<p>Like Hitler, Putin must first be defeated and his country de-Nazified before any kind of reasonable dialogue can take place between Russia and Ukraine\u2014as well as between Russia and the West. That doesn\u2019t mean that diplomacy should cease: miracles do happen. Nor does defeat mean Russia\u2019s collapse or destruction. But it does mean, at a minimum, Russia\u2019s withdrawal from Ukraine and, arguably more important, Putin\u2019s departure. The West should have no illusions. Even if Putin avails himself of some \u201coff ramps,\u201d his Russia will remain a threat to world peace, and renewed war\u2014with Ukraine or with other post-Soviet states\u2014will be well-nigh inevitable. European Commission President Ursula\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/global-europe\/news\/russia-most-direct-threat-to-world-order-von-der-leyen-says-at-eu-japan-summit\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/global-europe\/news\/russia-most-direct-threat-to-world-order-von-der-leyen-says-at-eu-japan-summit\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1652531001258000&#038;usg=AOvVaw3afi9_z-vA_zmOEB3YV_Zc\">von der Leyen<\/a>\u00a0was absolutely right to say that Russia \u201cis today the most direct threat to the world order.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38144\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-38144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Russian President Putin.
