You couldn\u2019t really get away from him,\u201d Colombian American Carolina Serrano, who is one of 103 Hispanic GOP candidates seeking a congressional seat this November, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201c[Republicans] started reaching out to Latinos while Democrats, many times, had a lackluster outreach operation, especially at the congressional level,\u201d Democrat political strategist Chuck Rocha told TheDCNF.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Republican Congressional candidate Carolina Serrano said Hispanic and Latino lives have gotten worse after years of voting for Democrats, while Republican gains among the base reveal a potential realignment ahead of the 2022 and 2024 elections.<\/p>\n<p>There are a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/04\/19\/record-number-hispanic-republicans-new-mexico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">record<\/a> 103 Hispanic GOP candidates running for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, including Serrano, a Colombian American woman running to be the Republican candidate in Nevada\u2019s 1st Congressional District. Serrano said former President Donald Trump\u2019s presidency contributed to the wider trend of Hispanic and Latino voters shifting to the Republican Party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce Donald Trump came into office, he was kind of ubiquitous on news stations. There\u2019s no real chance of escaping whatever class that you\u2019re born into,\u201d she said. \u201cThat is what, I think, woke up Hispanics is seeing that after voting for Democrats for so long life hasn\u2019t improved \u2013 it\u2019s actually gotten worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you had Donald Trump come in and actually put some policies in place that worked for all Americans,\u201d Serrano said.<\/p>\n<p>The economy, crime and safety, and education are the top three issues for Hispanic and Latino voters, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/fw-d7-freedomworks-org.s3.amazonaws.com\/FreedomWorks-Bullfinch%20Hispanic-Latino%20Messaging%20Survey%20.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">February poll<\/a> from FreedomWorks. Hispanics saw Republicans as a way to get the country back on track following restrictive COVID-19 measures, according to\u00a0Peter Vicenzi, the director of communications at FreedomWorks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people who are Hispanic work service industry jobs or construction jobs that were really hit really hard by COVID restrictions,\u201d Vicenzi\u00a0told TheDCNF. \u201cThey saw Republicans as the way, kind of, to get back to work and get the country headed in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vicenzi said the GOP needs to remind voters it supports law enforcement and \u201c[supports] parents having a choice in their kids\u2019 education\u201d in order to continue their momentum and build on their support from the Hispanic and Latino voter base. Nearly 60% of the March poll\u2019s respondents support \u201cparental involvement in education,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomworks.org\/content\/freedomworks-bullfinch-group-poll-shows-conservative-policies-resonate-hispanic-voters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople come to America because we\u2019re a country that has a strong emphasis on rule of law,\u201d he said. \u201cRepublicans actually support school choice. That\u2019s a big issue that resonates, we found in our polling, that really resonates with Hispanics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2020 presidential election also revealed a rightward shift among Hispanic and Latino voters, notably in <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/03\/biden-trump-hispanic-voters-florida-ohio-georgia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/12\/hispanics-republicans-democrats-latinx-border-security-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Texas border counties<\/a>. Democratic political strategist Chuck Rocha described the shift as what he called an \u201cerosion\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/07\/florida-democrats-hispanics-americano-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Latino voters<\/a> to the right due to a greater effort on the Republican side and a \u201clackluster\u201d effort from Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, first of all, I think that you need to think about Latino voters more so than the Latino vote because it\u2019s just different from state to state and it\u2019s different from election to election,\u201d Rocha told TheDCNF. \u201cBut one thing is clear is that there has been an erosion, a slight erosion in most states, to the Republican Party as Latinos are coming of age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans never had before up until about 10 years ago spent any kind of really resources to communicate to Latinos,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, they started reaching out to Latinos while Democrats, many times, had a lackluster outreach operation, especially at the congressional level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats should focus on immigration, specifically better border security and a pathway to citizenship, and\u00a0education, such as vouchers and charter schools for black and Hispanic communities ahead of the 2022 and 2024 elections, according to Doug Schoen, a former adviser to former President Bill Clinton. He also said funding, not defunding, the police is another key issue in both Hispanic and black communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, for example, in terms of Hispanics, I would suggest that doing a grand bargain on immigration \u2013 tighter border security combined with a pathway to citizenship \u2013 would, in my judgment, be a very good way to address the issues of the borders,\u201d Schoen told TheDCNF. \u201cSomething that the Democrats have been, I think, largely silent on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people that are most reliant on law enforcement on a day-to-day basis are those who are living in areas that arguably would have the highest crime rates,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd, frequently, not always, but frequently those areas are black and Hispanic areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
