By the time Biden took office in January 2021, more than 22 million doses of the vaccine had been administered, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact Check:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The May 12 tweet claims that there was \u201cno vaccine available\u201d when Biden took office and that since then 8.3 million jobs have been created, bringing the unemployment rate down to 3.6 percent.<\/p>\n<p>While the job figures touted in the tweet are largely correct, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/finance\/3486753-white-house-gets-boxed-in-on-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Hill<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/charts\/employment-situation\/civilian-unemployment-rate.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>, the claim regarding vaccines is inaccurate. The U.S. administered its first COVID-19 vaccines to health care workers and residents in senior citizen homes in December 2020, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/12\/health\/covid-vaccine-first.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New York Times<\/a>. The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine became the first vaccine to receive emergency use authorization (EUA) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Dec. 11, 2020, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizer.com\/news\/press-release\/press-release-detail\/pfizer-and-biontech-celebrate-historic-first-authorization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pharmaceutical company<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By the time Biden took office in January 2021, more than 22 million doses of the various FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccines had been administered in the U.S., according to data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#vaccination-trends_vacctrends-total-cum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC<\/a>. Biden himself received his first COVID-19 vaccine dose Dec. 21, 2020 and his second dose weeks later on Jan. 11, 2021, CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/01\/11\/politics\/biden-second-dose-coronavirus-vaccine\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/01\/11\/politics\/biden-second-dose-coronavirus-vaccine\/index.html&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1652553909114000&#038;usg=AOvVaw1KqepThh-b9TYCtn1hH-I8\">reported<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/09\/30\/fact-check-joe-biden-build-back-better-agenda-cost-zero-dollars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Would Joe Biden\u2019s Build Back Better Agenda Cost \u2018Zero Dollars\u2019?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t true that there were zero vaccines available prior to the Biden administration for I was fully vaccinated before inauguration,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforhealthsecurity.org\/our-people\/adalja\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. <\/a><span class=\"qu\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"gridcell\" translate=\"no\"><span class=\"gD\" data-hovercard-id=\"aadalja1@jhu.edu\" data-hovercard-owner-id=\"119\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforhealthsecurity.org\/our-people\/adalja\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amesh Adalja<\/a>, a s<\/span><\/span>enior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, in an email to Check Your Fact. \u201cHowever, availability did increase significantly over the coming months after he took office but this was largely the result of prior planning through Operation Warp Speed and it was the expected timeline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Operation Warp Speed was a federal effort <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2021\/08\/25\/1029715721\/pfizer-vaccine-operation-warp-speed-delay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">led<\/a> by the Trump administration to speed up the development of the various COVID-19 vaccines, according to a report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-21-319\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Government Accountability Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical adviser for the White House and the director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the tweet was not accurate during an interview with CNN anchor Jake Tapper, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/tv\/fauci-grows-defensive-when-pressed-by-jake-tapper-on-wh-claim-no-vaccine-existed-under-trump-youre-talking-to-the-wrong-person\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mediaite<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think from a pure accuracy, that\u2019s not a correct statement,\u201d Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>Check Your Fact reached out to the White House for comment and will update this article if a response is provided.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A tweet from the verified White House Twitter account claims there were no COVID-19 vaccines available before President Joe Biden took office in January 2021.
