Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2022\/05\/GettyImages-1202252294.jpg?w=1200&#038;h=800&#038;ixlib=react-9.3.0\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Oregon now requires public schools to provide feminine hygiene products in the boys bathrooms, and some parents are concerned.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cMenstrual Dignity Act\u201d was <a href=\"https:\/\/olis.oregonlegislature.gov\/liz\/2021R1\/Downloads\/MeasureDocument\/HB3294\/Enrolled\">passed<\/a> last year by the Democrat-controlled Oregon legislature and signed by Governor Kate Brown.<\/p>\n<p>The law requires that all Oregon public schools provide free menstrual products like tampons and pads in boys and all-gender restrooms, as well as in girls restrooms\u00a0by the end of the 2022-2023 school year.\u00a0Menstrual products, as well as instructions on how to use them, will be placed in all school bathrooms, including at elementary schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis act was passed last year without parental or taxpayer input and parents still haven\u2019t been informed by the schools about what\u2019s happening,\u201d Kori Gilmore, a mom of\u00a0two elementary school boys in the Medford School District,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ktvl.com\/news\/local\/free-menstrual-products-coming-to-all-public-school-restrooms-in-oregon-medford-school-district-tampons-pads-department-education-boys-girls-gender\">told<\/a> local outlet\u00a0KTVL.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really do not think this is appropriate,\u201d Gilmore\u00a0said. \u201cIt can bring up subjects that younger kids aren\u2019t ready to discuss, and I do believe parents should have a say in what the school teaches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gilmore added that she is aware of other parents who are just as upset as she is about the new menstrual product policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my opinion, I don\u2019t feel like there is an appropriate age for this because boys cannot have periods and I really don\u2019t think it\u2019s healthy to teach our kids that they can,\u201d she told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>At least one\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/libsoftiktok\/status\/1522292789723029505\">video<\/a> posted on social media earlier this month claims to show a feminine hygiene product dispenser installed in the boys bathroom at an Oregon public school, the video panning from the urinals to the dispenser.<\/p>\n<p>The Oregon Department of Education argues that the new law\u00a0\u201caffirms the right to menstrual dignity for transgender, intersex, non-binary and two spirit students.\u201d One in four teens have missed class because they were unable to get menstrual products, according to the department.<\/p>\n<p>However, the new policy goes beyond simply providing menstrual products for students.\u00a0The education department\u2019s \u201cMenstrual Dignity for Students Toolkit\u201d includes several eyebrow-raising recommendations, such as potentially teaching kindergartners about transgender hormone blockers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntegrate trans-specific puberty information in K-12 instruction,\u201d reads one recommendation, which links to a <a href=\"https:\/\/amaze.org\/video\/puberty-and-transgender-youth\/\">resource<\/a> on puberty blockers, which delay the onset of puberty in children with gender dysphoria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncrease awareness of two spirit people, of their historical standing in Tribal Nation communities as highly respected and honored people,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/ode\/students-and-family\/healthsafety\/Documents\/ODE%20Menstrual%20Dignity%20For%20Students%20Toolkit.pdf\">reads<\/a>\u00a0another recommendation.<\/p>\n<p>Some social media users reacted with outrage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI and many Oregonian women find your Menstrual Dignity Act an affront to women,\u201d one Twitter user <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/celestialmuse7\/status\/1522333940211601409?s=20&#038;t=1TXyzjpZ2nYYzMV7c9ep6w\">said<\/a>. \u201cOnly females can menstruate. Only females should be in the female restroom, and only males should be in the male restroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas anyone considered the trauma girls will experience when boys run up &#038; down hallways, waving tampons &#038; pantomiming insertion?\u201d another <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/twinmajik\/status\/1522354549461114880?s=20&#038;t=1TXyzjpZ2nYYzMV7c9ep6w\">remarked<\/a>. \u201cRidiculing girls at their most vulnerable is NOT dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Republican gubernatorial candidate ripped the law as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an absolute implosion of the family; it\u2019s a violation of the family,\u201d Bridget Barton, a Republican running for Oregon governor,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/gop-candidate-oregon-menstrual-dignity-act-implosion-family\">told<\/a> Fox News in reference to the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Complaints\u2019 doesn\u2019t even begin to describe it,\u201d she said about what she\u2019s hearing from parents about the menstrual products policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of them haven\u2019t even heard yet about all this background stuff that the teachers are going to be forced to teach in sex ed classes, in health classes. I\u2019m hearing from parents everywhere who say it\u2019s almost beyond belief,\u201d Barton\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>Barton said she has already filed a legal appeal against the law.<\/p>\n<p>Oregon is not the first state to start providing feminine hygiene products in boys bathrooms at school.
