It said bureaucrats gave up on churning through a huge backlog and simply trashed the documents over a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe continued inability to process backlogs of paper-filed tax returns contributed to management\u2019s decision to destroy an estimated 30 million paper-filed information return documents in March 2021,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.treasury.gov\/tigta\/auditreports\/2022reports\/202240036fr.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the report<\/a>\u00a0stated.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IRS?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IRS<\/a> decided to destroy an estimated 30 million paper-filed information return documents in March 2021 because of its inability to process its backlog of paper <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/tax?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#tax<\/a> returns, according to a new report. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8o5EhZrmy2\">https:\/\/t.co\/8o5EhZrmy2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Accounting Today (@AccountingToday) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AccountingToday\/status\/1523714386795409409?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The documents, described as paper-filed information returns, are filed annually by employers and financial institutions, and include copies of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-w-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">W-2<\/a> forms sent to taxpayers. The paperwork is used to verify the details on individual taxpayers\u2019 returns, and without it, the IRS could see more delays and mixups, they predicted.<\/p>\n<p>IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig blamed the backlog on budget cuts and the COVID pandemic, which resulted in offices being closed for long stretches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were no negative taxpayer consequences as a result of this action,\u201d the IRS said in a statement. \u201cTaxpayers or payers have not been and will not be subject to penalties resulting from this action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Bill Pascrell, (D-NJ), called on the Biden administration to fire Rettig over the scandal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe IRS is vital to public confidence in our nation and its Trump-appointed leader has failed,\u201d said Pascrell, chair of the House Ways and Means Committee\u2019s oversight subcommittee.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_381826\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-381826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rep. (Tom Williams\/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Tax professionals were aghast that the agency dumped the massive trove of documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was horrified when I read the report describing the destruction of paper-filed information returns,\u201d Phyllis Jo Kubey, president of the New York State Society of Enrolled Agents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/05\/12\/tax-pros-horrified-by-irs-decision-to-destroy-data-on-30-million-filers.html\">told CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"MidResponsive-midResponsiveContainer\">\n<div id=\"MidResponsive-1\" class=\"\" data-module=\"mps-slot\">\n<p>Even with the agency increasingly going paperless, experts said the documents should have been put into the system, not simply tossed.
