The moves follow sanctions against several oligarchs close, or once close to the embattled Russian leader, and target his innermost circle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPutin relies on his network of family, childhood friends, and selected elite who have benefited from his rule and in turn support his lifestyle,\u201d the U.K. said in a news release. \u201cTheir reward is influence over the affairs of the Russian state that goes far beyond their formal positions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s sanctions will hit this cabal who owe Putin their wealth and power, and in turn support Putin and his war machine,\u201d the release continued.<\/p>\n<p>Kabaeva, a retired Olympic\u00a0gymnast, is chairwoman of the board of the National Media\u00a0Group, Russia\u2019s largest private\u00a0media company. She previously served as a deputy in the Duma for Putin\u2019s United\u00a0Russia. Her grandmother,\u00a0Zatseplina, is an associate of\u00a0Gennady Timchenko \u2013 a longtime Putin crony, sanctioned by the U.K. in February.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_361753\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-361753\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s closest allies, including his girlfriend and ex-wife, have been hit with sanctions by the United Kingdom. (Photo by MIKHAIL KLIMENTYEV\/SPUTNIK\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ocheretnaya, the former first lady of the Russian Federation who Putin divorced in 2014, enjoys a lavish lifestyle and wields power within Moscow circles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are exposing and targeting the shady network propping up Putin\u2019s luxury lifestyle and tightening the vise on his inner circle,\u201d Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said. \u201cWe will keep going with sanctions on all those aiding and abetting Putin\u2019s aggression until Ukraine prevails.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other sanctions announced by the U.K. hit Putin\u2019s blood relatives. They included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Igor Putin, first cousin of Putin and a Russian businessman who is director of Pechenga International Sea Port<\/li>\n<li>Mikhail Putin, a relative of Putin who holds key positions at Russian energy giant Gazprom and insurance carrier SOGAZ<\/li>\n<li>Roman Putin, first cousin once removed of Putin whose company, Putin Consulting, helps foreign investors in Russia<\/li>\n<li>Mikhail Shelomov, Putin\u2019s first cousin, once removed and a key shareholder in Kremlin-tied Bank Rossiya, which was sanctioned in February<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Others sanctioned by the U.K. Friday included a childhood pal and several businessmen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s sanctions isolate the family members and financiers deep within Putin\u2019s inner circle, compounding the pressure on Putin as he continues his senseless invasion into Ukraine,\u201d the U.K. said.<\/p>\n<p>Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, at least 2,345 Ukrainian civilians have died, and 2,919 have been injured, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/news\/2022\/04\/ukraine-civilian-casualty-update-21-april-2022\">an update<\/a>\u00a0last month.
