He was working as the host of \u201cMister Rogers\u2019 Neighborhood\u201d through much of the war.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/vetsofvietnam\/photos\/a.212524172629719\/1129814464234014\/?type=3&#038;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post<\/a>, which has garnered over 1,000 reactions, appears to show a drawing of a shirtless Rogers holding a rifle. \u201cDid you know? Fred McFeely Rogers A.K.A. Mr. Rogers was a USMC sniper in Vietnam,\u201d the post claims. \u201cHis military record states: 55 confirmed kills and over 100 probables.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This claim has no factual basis. Rogers, known to many as Mister Rogers for his role in the children\u2019s show, \u201cMister Rogers\u2019 Neighborhood,\u201d was born in 1928, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Fred-Rogers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Britannica<\/a>. He graduated from Rollins College in 1951 and then wrote, produced and served as a puppeteer for \u201cThe Children\u2019s Corner,\u201d from 1954 to 1961, the encyclopedia states. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/03\/23\/fact-check-image-steve-irwin-fred-rogers-bob-ross\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Viral Image Claims To Show Steve Irwin And Fred Rogers Posing Together)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1963, Rogers moved to Canada and started performing as Mister Rogers on the Canadian Broadcast Channel, according to the Mister Rogers official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.misterrogers.org\/about-fred-rogers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>. He then launched the official \u201cMister Rogers\u2019 Neighborhood\u201d broadcast in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1966 and the show aired nationally in 1968, the website reports. The show\u2019s official website makes no mention of Rogers\u2019 alleged military service.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the U.S. entered the Vietnam War in August 1964, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/vietnam-war\/vietnam-war-timeline#section_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">History Channel<\/a>. Not only was Rogers working on the production of his children\u2019s shows at the time, but he was also no longer eligible for the U.S. draft, which conscripted men who were between 18 and 25 years old, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sss.gov\/history-and-records\/changes-from-vietnam-to-now\/#:~:text=Before%20the%20lottery%20was%20implemented,25%20years%20old%2C%20oldest%20first.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Selective Service System<\/a> website.
