Wade<\/span><\/i><span> and <\/span><i><span>Planned Parenthood v. Casey<\/span><\/i><span>, noting that there is \u201cincreasing news coverage of state-level momentum\u201d to pass abortion regulations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, National Right to Life was joined by other pro-life lobbying groups in taking a hard-line stance against passing legislation that imposes criminal penalties upon mothers who seek abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWomen are victims of abortion and require our compassion and support as well as ready access to counseling and social services in the days, weeks, months, and years following an abortion,\u201d the letter said. \u201cAs national and state pro-life organizations, representing tens of millions of pro-life men, women, and children across the country, let us be clear: We state unequivocally that any measure seeking to criminalize or punish women is <\/span><i><span>not <\/span><\/i><span>pro-life and we stand firmly opposed to such efforts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The letter was signed by National Right to Life, March for Life Action, Susan B. Anthony List, Democrats for Life, and the Southern Baptist Convention\u2019s Ethics and Religious Liberty Counsel (ERLC), among other groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis will be a tremendous opportunity for states to create durable policy that can stand the test of time,\u201d the letter said in relation to the end of <\/span><i><span>Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i><span>. \u201cBut in seizing that opportunity, we must ensure that the laws we advance to protect unborn children do not harm their mothers \u2026 turning women who have abortions into criminals is not the way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The letter was issued on the same day that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/LA\/bill\/HB813\/2022\"><span>Abolition of Abortion in Louisiana Act<\/span><\/a><span> (HB813) was scheduled for a vote in the Louisiana House of Representatives. The bill \u2014 which has gained national and international media attention \u2014 recognizes \u201cthe right to life and equal protection of the laws to all unborn children from the moment of fertilization by protecting them by the same laws protecting other human beings.\u201d Accordingly, it applies state laws about homicide to children in the womb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Indeed, a notable exception to the pro-life activists who signed the letter was And Then There Were None founder Abby Johnson, who recently condemned Louisiana Right to Life for opposing HB813. \u201cEither the preborn are fully human or they aren\u2019t,\u201d she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AbbyJohnson\/status\/1523085382820282368\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> on Twitter. \u201cWhen abortion is illegal, people must pay the penalty for killing their children. These children deserve justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Zach Conover \u2014 the communications director for Christian ministry <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/endabortionnow.com\/\"><span>End Abortion Now<\/span><\/a><span>, which supports the Abolition of Abortion in Louisiana Act \u2014 told The Daily Wire last week that \u201cequal protection simply means the same laws that protect born children from being murdered ought to protect preborn children from the same thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cEvery state has a penal code for homicide,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, with many of these states there exists within the code an exception for abortion. HB813 removes the exception to ensure that there can be no legal discrimination against babies in the womb.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Pastor Dusty Deevers \u2014 the head of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/southernbaptistsabolishingabortion.com\/\"><span>Southern Baptists for Abolishing Abortion<\/span><\/a><span> \u2014 noted that the ERLC signed the letter in spite of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbc.net\/resource-library\/resolutions\/on-abolishing-abortion\/\"><span>resolution<\/span><\/a><span> passed by SBC messengers last summer affirming that \u201cthe murder of preborn children is a crime against humanity that must be punished equally under the law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe pro-life establishment has unified and exposed themselves as secular and not consistently Christian,\u201d Deevers argued on social media. \u201cChristians need to leave and drain the pro-life establishment swamp.
