The horse known to its team as \u201cRitchie\u201d has already made history by being the second-longest shot to win in the Kentucky Derby 148-year history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur original plan for Rich Strike was contingent on the KY Derby, should we not run in the derby we would point toward the Preakness, should we run in the Derby, subject to the race outcome &#038; the condition of our horse, we would give him more recovery time &#038; rest and run in the Belmont, or another race and stay on course to run with 5 or 6 weeks rest between races,\u201d Dawson said in a statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BREAKING?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BREAKING<\/a>: Owner Rick Dawson released a statement Thursday afternoon confirming that Rich Strike will not be running in the Preakness, but will pursue a post position in the Belmont Stakes in June. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/k5cLOwyMLD\">https:\/\/t.co\/k5cLOwyMLD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Spectrum News 13 (@MyNews13) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MyNews13\/status\/1524808652036644864?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 12, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Preakness will be run at Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore May 21. The Belmont Stakes is set for Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., on June 11.<\/p>\n<p>Rich Strike came from behind to win the Kentucky Derby by 3\/4 of a length over Epicenter and third-place finisher Zandon. Rich Strike\u2019s team won $1.86 million of the Derby\u2019s $3 million purse. Nearly 16 million viewers watched the race on NBC.<\/p>\n<p>The only time a horse overcame longer odds to win the race was in 1913, when Donerail triumphed after closing as a 91-1 longshot. Rich Strike was only added to the field Friday after Ethereal Road dropped out.<\/p>\n<p>The colt was an even bigger underdog in Las Vegas, where some sports books had him as long as 300-1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how [to put the win into word]. I fell down in the paddock when he hit the wire. I about passed out. I\u2019m so happy,\u201d trainer Eric Reed said after the race. \u201cThis is something, you know, is the reason everybody does this, because we\u2019re not supposed to be here, but I knew this horse loved the track, and we\u2019ve been training so good all year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed came under fire Thursday after he\u00a0was asked on ESPN\u2019s \u201cOutside the Lines\u201d program if he was the author of a tweet saying Harris was \u201cgood on her knees.\u201d The tweet was sent by a Twitter user who has the same name and goes by @daddyrabbit1964.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t seen anything about it,\u201d Reed told ESPN host John Barr.\u00a0\u201cHaven\u2019t been told about it. I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on out there. I\u2019m more concerned with Richie and what\u2019s going on with us, and this great horse, and how much he\u2019s helping everybody.
