Byron Donalds, will introduce a bill later Thursday that would end a program providing cell phones to illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u2019s Alternatives to Detention program is intended to allow the federal government to electronically surveil illegal immigrants who are awaiting deportation proceedings. Most participants in the program are given an ankle monitor or cell phone with a GPS tracking app. The program has faced criticism from both the left and the right in recent years, with liberal groups <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/01\/alternative-detention-ice-immigrant-biden\/\">arguing<\/a> that it violates the privacy of illegal immigrants, and conservatives arguing that it allows illegal immigrants to escape detection.<\/p>\n<p>The No More Phones Act prohibits the \u201c<span class=\"a\">use [of[ American taxpayer funding to <\/span><span class=\"a\">provide cellular devices to individuals who cross the south<\/span><span class=\"a\">ern border illegally\u201d and would require Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to issue a report detailing the number of cell phones distributed and whether or not they were returned when illegal immigrants appeared at deportation proceedings. The bill has eleven co-sponsors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the guise of President Biden\u2019s so-called \u2018leadership,\u2019 this administration has excessively wasted taxpayer funds by routinely providing cell phones to illegal immigrants\u2014which are more than likely to be disposed of at a later date to avoid government detection,\u201d Donalds told the Daily Caller in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving been to the border three times, I\u2019ve seen first-hand the distribution of taxpayer-funded cell phones to individuals that purposely sidestep our legal immigration system\u2014that\u2019s why I\u2019ve introduced the No More Phones Act. Trump administration immigration official Matthew Albence <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/09\/18\/ice-alternative-detention-flores-settlement\/\">testified<\/a> to Congress in 2018 that 28% of families in the program do not appear for deportation hearings, despite the fact that it is intended for individuals who are considered more likely to comply with immigration law.<\/p>\n<p>Customs and Border Protection <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/25\/customs-border-protection-illiegal-immigration-2-million-december\/\">encountered<\/a> more than two million migrants in 2021, a record high. More than 225,000 migrants are currently monitored under the Alternatives to Detention program, <a href=\"https:\/\/trac.syr.edu\/immigration\/quickfacts\/\">according<\/a> to Syracuse University. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/26\/immigration-and-customs-enforcement-arrests-2021-joe-biden\/\">(RELATED: ICE Officials Made The Lowest Number Of Arrests In At Least A Decade: REPORT)<\/a><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The White House has defended the program, with Press Secretary Jen Psaki claiming that the \u201cvast, vast majority of people\u201d in the program appear for deportation proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmartlink, which is another option, enables participant monitoring via smartphone or tablet using facial matching technology to establish identity,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/biden-administration-giving-cell-phones-to-illegal-immigrants-to-track-and-check-in-with-them#\">said<\/a> during her April 6 press briefing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur concern is ensuring that individuals who irregularly migrate to the United States proceed through our process of, you know, of course, being monitored, but also participating in hearings to determine whether or not they will be able to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republicans in the House of Representatives, led by Florida Rep.
