Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2022\/04\/GettyImages-1239744984.jpg?w=1200&#038;h=800&#038;ixlib=react-9.3.0\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span>Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) on Thursday called for Disney to lose its \u201ccopyright protections\u201d and for Major League Baseball (MLB) to lose its \u201clongstanding antitrust exemption.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In an opinion piece for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/end-economic-handouts-woke-corporations-sen-josh-hawley.amp\"><span>Fox News<\/span><\/a><span> entitled \u201cIt\u2019s time to end economic handouts for woke corporations,\u201d the conservative lawmaker wrote that \u201ctoday\u2019s multinationals have embraced a toxic blend of offshoring and woke politics, selling out American workers even as they attack American values.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hawley emphasized large corporations\u2019 efforts to speak into debates over social policy, especially noting their progressive leanings. \u201cBig business\u2019s priorities now apparently extend to voter ID laws, abortion, and sex education classes for younger and younger children, to name just a few examples,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In reference to Disney executives\u2019 efforts to inject more LGBTQ representation into its programming while appeasing \u201cChinese censors\u201d to \u201cavoid losing access to a lucrative market,\u201d Hawley suggested that Congress should end Disney\u2019s copyright protections for characters like Mickey Mouse, which have been \u201cextended further and further into the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Earlier this week, Hawley proposed the \u201cCopyright Clause Restoration Act,\u201d which would limit new copyright protections to 56 years and retroactively change protections for companies like Disney that \u201chave been granted unnecessarily long copyright monopolies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cUnder Congress\u2019s current sweetheart deal, companies like Disney have been granted certain copyright protections for up to 120 years \u2014 well beyond the original maximum of 28 years,\u201d a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawley.senate.gov\/hawley-introduces-bill-strip-disney-special-copyright-protections\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span> from the lawmaker\u2019s office explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hawley also argued in his opinion piece that MLB was \u201call too happy to try to bully the State of Georgia over its election integrity laws.\u201d He said it should therefore \u201close its longstanding antitrust exemption, which no other industry enjoys in the same way.\u201d He also called for \u201ca flat ban on further acquisitions\u201d for \u201cthe very largest firms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last year, Hawley and other Republican lawmakers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cruz-hawley-lee-team-up-on-bill-to-strip-mlb-of-monopoly-protections-over-georgia-boycott\"><span>introduced<\/span><\/a><span> a bill to strip MLB of its antitrust exemptions after it chose to relocate its 2021 All-Star Game and rookie draft out of Atlanta in response to election reform efforts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBy eliminating special preferences and carve outs, we can support competition in the economy, and encourage innovation and the rise of new firms that can challenge the big incumbents, all while turbocharging prosperity here at home,\u201d Hawley concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Indeed, Hawley is a leading voice among Republican proponents of antitrust legislation. Last spring, he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawley.senate.gov\/senator-hawley-introduces-bust-big-tech-act\"><span>proposed<\/span><\/a><span> the \u201cBust Up Big Tech Act\u201d to break up companies \u201cseeking to dominate multiple industries simultaneously.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWoke Big Tech companies like Google and Amazon have been coddled by Washington politicians for years,\u201d Hawley said. \u201cThis treatment has allowed them to amass colossal amounts of power that they use to censor political opinions they don\u2019t agree with and shut out competitors who offer consumers an alternative to the status quo. It\u2019s past time to bust up Big Tech companies, restore competition, and give the power back to the American consumers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last summer, a bipartisan group of lawmakers likewise introduced a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bipartisan-antitrust-bills-would-break-up-amazon-google-apple-facebook\"><span>suite of antitrust bills<\/span><\/a><span> meant to limit the market power of technology companies. While conservatives like Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) noted the censorship of free speech, progressives like Rep.
