Layne Smith said the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/21\/florida-legislature-passes-congressional-map-redistricting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">map<\/a>\u2018s dismantling of black Democratic Rep. Al Lawson\u2019s district \u201cdiminishes the ability of African Americans to elect candidates of their choice,\u201d Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/11\/florida-judge-block-new-congressional-map-00031775?nname=playbook&#038;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&#038;nrid=0b34fe84-ed71-4a96-9b4b-77a80cb8363b&#038;nlid=630318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>. He said his intention is to issue a ruling that would keep Lawson\u2019s North Florida district intact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Judge Smith implied, these complex constitutional matters of law were always going to be decided at the appellate level,\u201d Taryn Fenske, a spokesperson for Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, told The Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis had <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/29\/ron-desantis-blocks-congressional-redistricting-florida-legislature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pushed<\/a> for the aggressive map during the redistricting process, even coming into conflict with the state\u2019s Republican legislature, who eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/12\/ron-desantis-major-victory-congressional-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">relented<\/a>. Smith was appointed by DeSantis two years ago, Politico reported.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This would save <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FL05?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FL05<\/a> Rep.
