Wade<\/em> that many Democrats were claiming it was.<\/p>\n<p>Manchin addressed the issue just hours before the Senate took a vote on the WHPA \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/schumer-senate-democrats-will-force-a-vote-on-abortion-law-next-week\/\">a vote that was forced<\/a> by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) despite the knowledge that <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/manchin-sinema-dodge-far-left-calls-to-break-filibuster-to-pass-abortion-bill\/\">without Manchin\u2019s support<\/a> it would not even garner 50 votes, much less the necessary 60 to get past the filibuster.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">MANCHIN: &#8220;Make no mistake. It expands abortion.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yfj6w3gTXU\">pic.twitter.com\/yfj6w3gTXU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Townhall.com (@townhallcom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/townhallcom\/status\/1524445801933647874?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 11, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe bill we have today to vote on, the Women\u2019s Health Protection Act, and I respect people who support it \u2014 but make no mistake, it is not <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> codification,\u201d Manchin told reporters. \u201cIt\u2019s an expansion. It wipes 500 \u2014 500 state laws off the books \u2014 it expands abortion. And with that, that\u2019s not where we are today. We should not be dividing this country further than we\u2019re already divided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really \u2014 the politics of Congress that\u2019s dividing the country, it\u2019s not the people,\u201d Manchin said. \u201cThey \u2014 they\u2019re telling us what they want. And it\u2019s just disappointing that we\u2019re going to be voting on a piece of legislation that I will not vote for today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), who has proposed her own legislation codifying a federal right to abortion with fellow Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), joined every other Republican senator in voting against the measure as well \u2014 and for much the same reason as Manchin.<\/p>\n<p>Collins criticized the WHPA as \u201ctoo broad,\u201d arguing that it did not <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/susan-collins-slams-dems-latest-attempt-to-codify-roe-v-wade\/\">leave room<\/a> for exemptions for religious organizations such as Catholic hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt supersedes all other federal and state laws, including the conscience protections that are in the Affordable Care Act,\u201d Collins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/05\/politics\/susan-collins-democrat-abortion-rights-bill\/index.html?utm_source=facebook&#038;utm_medium=news_tab\">lamented<\/a>, adding, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t protect the right of a Catholic hospital to not perform abortions. That right has been enshrined in law for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The WHPA failed in the Senate on Wednesday afternoon, as expected, with Manchin ensuring that the 51-49 majority striking it down was bipartisan.
