Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) asked her this simple question: \u201cCan you provide a definition for the word \u2018woman\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t \u2014\u201d Judge Jackson began before an incredulous Blackburn cut her off with, \u201cYou can\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot in this context. I\u2019m not a biologist,\u201d Jackson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe meaning of the word woman is so unclear and controversial that you can\u2019t give me a definition?\u201d Blackburn asked. \u201cThe fact that you can\u2019t give me a straight answer about something as fundamental as what a woman is underscores the dangers of the kind of progressive education that we are hearing about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judge Jackson was, of course, just posturing. The Federalist <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/23\/if-ketanji-brown-jackson-doesnt-know-what-a-woman-is-why-does-she-use-the-word-so-much\/\">noted<\/a> that she had referenced women 14 times during the first two days of her hearings, adding that there were 34 instances in her legal opinions as a judge in which she used the word.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s in vogue these days not to know what a woman is.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, defending Jackson, the liberal USA Today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2022\/03\/24\/marsha-blackburn-asked-ketanji-jackson-define-woman-science\/7152439001\/\">said<\/a> \u201ca competent biologist would not be able to offer a definitive answer either. Scientists agree there is no sufficient way to clearly define what makes someone a woman, and with billions of women on the planet, there is much variation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s pause here and just insert the definition of \u201cwoman\u201d from Merriam-Webster Dictionary: \u201can adult female person.\u201d Well, that wasn\u2019t so hard. But on we go.<\/p>\n<p>This new wordplay isn\u2019t new, by the way. Liberals, courting the LGBTQ vote, have long refused to define, well, just about anything.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2021 House spending bill, Democrats invented a new term: \u201cbirthing\u201d individuals. The bill avoided silly terms like \u201cmother,\u201d instead referring to \u201cpregnant, lactating, and postpartum individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) apparently didn\u2019t get the memo. Raging against the Texas pro-life Heartbeat Act, she called women \u201cwomen,\u201d but then remembered not to, later referring to \u201cpeople who give birth\u201d and \u201cany menstruating person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) created more controversy on social media when she, too, referred to \u201cbirthing people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day, Black birthing people and our babies die because our doctors don\u2019t believe our pain,\u201d she wrote on Twitter. What followed was not pretty.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) codified the whole mess, introducing a resolution calling for the elimination of gendered terms (forget that the California Democrat still had the terms \u201cmother\u201d and \u201cgrandmother\u201d in her Twitter bio).<\/p>\n<p>The resolution changed \u201cpronouns and familial relationships in the House rules to be gender-neutral or removes references to gender, as appropriate, to ensure we are inclusive of all Members, Delegates, Resident Commissioners and their families \u2014 including those who are nonbinary,\u201d her announcement said.<\/p>\n<p>NBC News jumped into the fray with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/feature\/nbc-out\/trans-dads-tell-doctors-you-can-be-man-have-baby-n1006906\">piece<\/a> headlined, \u201cTrans dads tell doctors: \u2018You can be a man and have a baby.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no data on how many transgender men and nonbinary people give birth in the United States each year, because medical systems track them as female, but experts believe the numbers are likely higher than many would expect,\u201d the news outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times (of course) went further, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/24\/opinion\/sexuality-gender.html\">saying<\/a>, how can we really know how many genders there really are? In fact, way back in 2014, Facebook \u201cintroduced dozens of options for users to identify their gender today \u2014 and although the social media giant said it would not be releasing a comprehensive list, ABC News has found at least 58 so far,\u201d the network reported.<\/p>\n<p>But suddenly, Democrats and liberals have found the meaning of the word \u201cwoman.\u201d You\u2019ll hear it everywhere, sometimes in a sentence like, \u201cwomen will be forced into back alleys with court hangers when the Supreme Court overturns <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A leak from within the Supreme Court last week passed to Politico quoted Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito as saying, \u201c<em>Roe<\/em> was egregiously wrong from the start\u201d and that \u201cwe hold that <em>Roe<\/em> \u2026 must be overruled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people\u2019s elected representatives,\u201d Alito added. \u201cThe Constitution makes no reference to abortion and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the leak, \u201ca woman\u2019s right to choose\u201d is now all liberals talk about. Not birthing individuals, not men, but women. Now, the word carries political power: Half of Americans are, after all, women. Choice \u2014 by women, mind you \u2014 will be on the ballot this November, and more than likely in November 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Funny, as it turns out, soon-to-be Justice Jackson actually knew what the word meant when she told senators she couldn\u2019t offer a definition. She said in her confirmation hearing that <em>Roe<\/em> is \u201cthe settled law of the Supreme Court concerning the right to terminate a woman\u2019s pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the Supreme Court leak opened up a whole new can of worms, at least it accomplished one thing: We now know that liberals actually do know the definition of the word \u201cwoman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>The views expressed in this piece are the author\u2019s own and do not necessarily represent those of The Daily Wire.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><em>Joseph Curl covered the White House for a dozen years and ran the Drudge Report for four years.
