Wade was leaked. Democrats failed to open debate on the bill in February after Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/28\/democrats-further-roe-vote-womens-health-protection-act-abortion-bill\/\">joined<\/a> all 50 Republicans in opposing a cloture vote. Wednesday\u2019s vote was a repeat of that roll call, and Democratic leaders did not appear to expect anything different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery senator will have to vote and every, every American will see how they voted. And I believe the Republican Party, the MAGA Republican Party, will suffer the consequences electorally when the American people see that,\u201d Schumer <a href=\"https:\/\/punchbowl.news\/archive\/5-11-22-punchbowl-news-am\/\">said<\/a> before the vote.<\/p>\n<p>The bill passed the House of Representatives in September 2021, with Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar the only Democrat to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/24\/henry-cuellar-one-democrat-against-womens-health-protection-act-abortion\/\">vote<\/a> against it. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/04\/top-house-democrats-henry-cuellar-abortion-texas-primary\/\"><strong>(RELATED: Democratic Leadership Supports Pro-Life Candidate While Bemoaning End Of Roe)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although top Democrats framed the legislation as affirming the legal regime established in Roe v. Wade, the Women\u2019s Health Protection Act eliminates several regulations that federal courts have upheld. The <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/28\/democrats-further-roe-vote-womens-health-protection-act-abortion-bill\/\">bill<\/a> would end bans on partial-birth abortions and eliminate requirements that women be presented with ultrasounds before they undergo an abortion. It would also likely allow sex-selective abortions, which eleven states currently ban, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/state-policy\/explore\/abortion-bans-cases-sex-or-race-selection-or-genetic-anomaly\">according<\/a> to the pro-legal abortion Guttmacher Institute.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Sens. Susan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/05\/05\/sen-collins-voices-opposition-legislation-that-would-create-statutory-right-abortion\/\">Collins<\/a> of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, both of whom <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/03\/susan-collins-lisa-murkowski-roe-wade-neil-gorsuch-brett-kavanaugh\/\">support<\/a> Roe v. Wade, announced that they would not support the Democratic legislation, citing those provisions. They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collins.senate.gov\/newsroom\/senators-collins-and-murkowski-introduce-bill-to-codify-supreme-court-decisions-on-reproductive-rights_roe-v-wade-and-planned-parenthood-v-casey\">introduced<\/a> an alternative amendment in February that would maintain conscience protections while legalizing abortion at the federal level, but Schumer has repeatedly refused to support \u201ccompromise\u201d legislation on the issue.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7427421\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7427421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WASHINGTON, DC \u2013 SEPTEMBER 23: U.S. Sen. Wade<\/span><span class=\"leaf\">. And I want you to know, it\u2019s not. This is not the same. It expands abortion,\u201d<\/span><\/span> Manchin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/minutes\/congress\/05-11-2022\/manchins-no-on-roe\/\">added<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During floor speeches in opposition to the legislation, Republicans emphasized polling showing that large majorities of Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/25\/americans-abortion-baby-poll-late-term\/\">support<\/a> limiting abortion past the point of fetal viability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c80% of Americans want to see abortion banned in the third trimester,\u201d Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse said. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to get 80% of Americans to agree on anything, yet 80% agree that third trimester abortions, the kind of thing this bill wants to make sure is explicitly championed, states could not prevent and prohibit third trimester abortions.
