The Senate should reject his nomination and President Biden should nominate someone else who\u2019s qualified,\u201d Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz told the Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bedoya expressed regret in November after senators grilled him over his past statements.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Senate is set to vote Wednesday on whether to confirm President Joe Biden\u2019s nominee to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), who has in the past criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over its deportation methods.<\/p>\n<p>Many Senate Republicans are against the nomination of Alvaro Bedoya, a Georgetown Law professor who founded its Center on Privacy &#038; Technology, arguing that he\u2019s too far left for the post. Bedoya has made a number of statements against ICE\u2019s use of personal data from private companies to track those in the country illegally to deport them. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/16\/joe-biden-ice-federal-trade-commission-alvaro-bedoya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Biden\u2019s Pick For FTC Commissioner Called ICE \u2018Out-Of-Control Domestic Surveillance\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz argued that Bedoya lacks any qualifications for the role and is merely another radical appointee of <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/10\/joe-biden-incoherent-speech-inflation-strength\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biden\u2019s<\/a>, telling the DCNF that \u201cit\u2019s become clear that Alvaro Bedoya would be a rubber stamp for President Biden\u2019s failed radical agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other critics of Bedoya argue that he could use his position in the FTC to accomplish his political agenda regarding immigration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlvaro Bedoya is the wrong nominee for the Federal Trade Commission at the wrong time. In most meetings, I am the only Latino in the room. I\u2019m almost always the only Latinx immigrant. Much of my work focuses on how surveillance affects immigrants and people of color. Yet, even for me, it is hard to see the technology behind ICE\u2019s brutality,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.republicanleader.senate.gov\/newsroom\/remarks\/democrats-pushing-radical-partisans-for-key-government-posts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> on the Senate floor Tuesday that Bedoya is a \u201cradical partisan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Bedoya is such a poor fit that the first time Leader Schumer tried to shut down debate on his nomination, he lacked the votes and had to call it off,\u201d McConnell said, adding that \u201cDemocrats want this hardcore partisan confirmed very badly. So here we are again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ranking Member of the Senate Commerce Committee Roger Wicker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.senate.gov\/2022\/3\/wicker-opposes-confirmation-of-ftc-nominee-alvaro-m-bedoya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> on March 29 that Bedoya\u2019s criticism of ICE should be disqualifying for a role with the FTC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Bedoya has a long history of divisive social media statements, including calling for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to be shut down; calling on local law enforcement agencies not to cooperate with ICE; accusing Cabinet-level departments of committing human rights abuses; and even demanding that several of our colleagues in the Senate resign,\u201d Wicker wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz told the DCNF that the Senate should reject Bedoya and allow Biden to try again with someone new.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo Republican on the Commerce Committee \u2013 a panel with a long tradition of bipartisan consensus \u2013 has supported Bedoya, because he\u2019s a partisan who\u2019s unqualified to fill this position.
