I\u2019m alive!,\u201d the energetic 93-year-old said Tuesday as he accepted the 2,723rd star on the Walk of Fame, located between Madame Tussaud\u2019s Wax Museum and the TCL Chinese Theater. And Hong just made history as the oldest person ever to receive a star on the Walk of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that he had no speech planned, \u201cbecause I\u2019m not that kind of person,\u201d Hong said he preferred to enjoy seeing familiar faces and take in the moment as it happened. <\/p>\n<p>His speech came after he had joked and improvised bits around the speeches of those who introduced him, including Kim, \u201c<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2022-03-24\/everything-everywhere-all-at-once-review-michelle-yeoh\">Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/a>\u201d co-star Jamie Lee Curtis and Councilmember  Mitch O\u2019Farrell, the last of whom granted him an elaborate, hand-lettered proclamation from the City of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>The lion dancers and musicians stepped on Hong\u2019s words a bit, but that didn\u2019t discourage the actor from hustling over to where the dance was taking place and adding a few traditional and nontraditional dance steps himself amid the drums and cymbals. But raising $55,000 in four days was the easy part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"promo-timestamp\" data-date=\"Aug. 10, 2020\" data-shouldshowdate=\"true\" data-shouldshowtime=\"true\" data-timestamp=\"1597099942333\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Hong, who is Chinese American, was born in Minnesota and served stateside in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He joins fellow performers of Asian descent including Anna May Wong, Mako, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Lucy Liu on the Walk of Fame. <\/p>\n<p>In the course of four days in August 2020, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2020-08-10\/daniel-dae-kim-james-hong-hollywood-walk-of-fame-star\">Kim raised the not-insubstantial sum<\/a> needed to pay for Hong\u2019s star, then took on the process of submitting an application. On the GoFundMe page, the \u201cHawaii Five-0&#8243; actor wrote that Hong \u201cepitomizes the term \u2018working actor,\u2019 and that\u2019s not even taking into account all he\u2019s done to help further representation for actors of color.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"enhancement\" data-click=\"enhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<div id=\"nativo_1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>(In 1965 Hong was a co-founder of East West Players, the first theater in the U.S. committed to \u201craising the visibility of the Asian American experience,\u201d according to the group\u2019s <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/eastwestplayers.org\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>. So let\u2019s give it up for Ming-Na Wen, Jason Momoa and (Black Eyed Peas founding member) apl.de.ap.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>But Kim noted that no one had \u201cblazed a trail\u201d like Hong had. \u201cThank you, James, for your body of work, your quality of work and your strength of character,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>The actor then cracked a few jokes about Hong\u2019s habit of emailing in all caps, saying it was hard not to feel like Hong was yelling at you even when he was saying the nicest things.
