Strzok <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/i-got-that-wrong-peter-strzok-admits-he-botched-timeline-on-opening-of-trump-russia-investigation\">admitted<\/a> in September 2020 he had gotten that detail wrong in his book, though he downplayed it. <\/p>\n<p>The mistake now seems like a pattern. <\/p>\n<p>Special counsel Robert Mueller and DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/peter-strzok-claim-about-russia-investigation-origins-contradicted-by-robert-mueller-and-doj-inspector-general\">concluded<\/a> Australia actually informed the United States of this Papadopoulos conversation on July 26, 2016. Trump <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?413263-1\/donald-trump-urges-russia-find-hillary-clinton-emails-criticizes-record-tpp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made the comment<\/a> about Russia on July 27. <\/p>\n<p>Newly released handwritten notes labeled as by Tashina Gauhar, then the associate deputy attorney general, indicate Strzok made the same misleading claim about Trump\u2019s remarks prompting the Australian to reach out to the FBI when briefing then-acting Attorney General Dana Boente and others on March 6, 2017. <\/p>\n<p>Notes from Associate Deputy Attorney General Scott Schools state it was Strzok who handled the Papadopoulos angle of the briefing. <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/biden-disinfo-chief-nina-jankowicz-pushed-trump-russia-collusion-claims\">BIDEN DISINFO CHIEF NINA JANKOWICZ PUSHED TRUMP-RUSSIA COLLUSION CLAIMS<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPapadopoulos \u2026 May 2016 \u2026 Friendly Liaison that Papadopoulos said Trump campaign could release info hurtful to H [Hillary Clinton] \u2026 Make a report &#038; file it,\u201d Gauhar wrote. \u201cThen see release of DNC hack + Trump comment about Russia release more \u2026 Foreign Service remembers conversation + reaches out to FBI.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Notes from Schools largely match this, writing, \u201cPS [Peter Strzok]: Papadopoulos in May. Trump team received suggestion from R [Russia] that it could assist Trump team by having info that would embarrass Clinton and Obama. We start seeing release of DNC hack. Trump if you\u2019re listening. We open up umbrella investigation \u2014 Crossfire Hurricane.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Schools added that the FBI briefed U.S. Attorney Zach Terwilliger \u201con predication and how he [Papadopoulos] fit in.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The notes were made public by attorneys for Democratic cybersecurity lawyer Michael Sussmann, who was <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/courts\/sussmann-wants-durham-filing-about-trump-white-house-snooping-stricken-from-record\">indicted<\/a><\/u> in a case brought by special counsel John Durham for allegedly <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/durham-grand-jury-indicts-lawyer-allegedly-lying-fbi-concealing-ties-clinton-campaign\">concealing<\/a><\/u> his clients, Clinton&#8217;s campaign and \u201cTech Executive-1\u201d <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/tech-exec-1-says-he-will-plead-the-fifth-in-durham-case\">Rodney Joffe<\/a><\/u>, from former FBI general counsel James Baker in September 2016 when he presented discredited Trump-Russia claims. <\/p>\n<p>Sussmann\u2019s team <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/clinton-campaign-lawyer-bets-on-fired-fbi-agent-peter-strzok-to-fight-durham-case\">cited<\/a> <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/strzok-attacks-durham-indictment-against-sussmann-and-chilling-effect-on-fisas\">legal analysis<\/a><\/u> by <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/you-deserve-to-be-divorced-not-fired-peter-strzok-quotes-wife-in-arguing-against-fbi-firing-for-anti-trump-texts\">Strzok<\/a><\/u> when unsuccessfully arguing for dismissal. <\/p>\n<p>A calendar invitation for the 2017 meeting said the organizer was Gauhar, while other required attendees were Baker, acting Assistant Attorney General Mary McCord, FBI counterintelligence official Bill Priestap, James Rybicki of the FBI, and members of DOJ\u2019s National Security Division. <\/p>\n<p>Strzok previously admitted his book mistake during a <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.georgetown.edu\/event\/css-speaker-series-compromised-a-discussion-with-peter-strzok\/\">Zoom discussion<\/a><\/u> when asked about the contradiction unearthed by the <i>Washington Examiner<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I got that wrong. So, I was writing my book without the benefit of the notes \u2014 the FBI had those \u2014 and the IG report had not been issued,\u201d Strzok said. \u201cWhat happened was there was a big dump through WikiLeaks that occurred prior to the Australians notifying us, and it\u2019s absolutely as the IG report describes it. [The Australians] saw that, that prompted their memory of the conversation, and then they began the process of contacting us overseas and giving that information to us. My recollection is, and the reason why I mentioned that conversation about Trump\u2019s speech and \u2018Russia, are you listening?\u2019 \u2014 when we finally in the Counterintelligence Division got that lead from the friendly foreign government, it was at the same time as Trump was making those comments, which were really concerning.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Strzok called it \u201ca little error,\u201d saying: \u201cI know some people are scrubbing timelines for little details and scoping headlines around them, but that was an honest mistake based on a lack of a specific recollection, and then, after I had submitted my book to pre-pub review, all this information came out afterwards.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Strzok\u2019s book came out in September 2020, months after Horowitz\u2019s report was released in December 2019 and more than a year after Mueller\u2019s report was made public in April 2019. <\/p>\n<p>His book falsely claimed \u201cthe communication &#8230; had been precipitated by a public statement by Donald Trump,\u201d and \u201cin Downer\u2019s recounting, Trump\u2019s words jarred his memory of a series of conversations months earlier.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Strzok made the same false claim on CBS when asked if Trump&#8217;s words brought the investigation down on himself. Strzok replied, \u201cAccording to what the foreign government told us, yes.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Trump <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/trump-call-for-russia-to-hack-clintons-emails-was-a-joke\">suggested<\/a><\/u> to the Conservative Political Action Conference in March 2019 that his comments were \u201csarcastic.&#8221; He <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/storage\/report.pdf\">told<\/a><\/u> Mueller\u2019s investigators he \u201cmade the statement \u2026 in jest and sarcastically.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The \u201copening electronic communication\u201d for Crossfire Hurricane was <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/declassified-trump-russia-launch-document-authored-by-strzok-and-investigated-by-durham\">authored<\/a><\/u> by Strzok and authorized by Priestap at the end of July 2016. The investigation didn&#8217;t interview Papadopoulos until January 2017. <\/p>\n<p>It was then Papadopoulos revealed his April 2016 conversations with Maltese professor Joseph Mifsud, who the Trump campaign adviser claimed told him the Russians had damaging information on Clinton. Papadopoulos <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/former-trump-foreign-policy-adviser-george-papadopoulos-pleads-guilty-to-lying-about-contact-with-russians\">pleaded guilty<\/a><\/u> in 2017 to making false statements about his communications with Mifsud. <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>Horowitz found the FBI\u2019s Trump-Russia investigation had \u201csufficient factual predication.\u201d Then-Attorney General William Barr and Durham disagreed.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Notes of an FBI briefing in March 2017 indicate since-fired bureau agent Peter Strzok spread incorrect details about the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation.
