Tom Reed announced his resignation from Congress on Tuesday, more than a year after first being accused of sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter almost 12 years in Congress, today is my last day,\u201d Reed <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/news\/house\/3483328-republican-lawmaker-announces-resignation-from-congress-following-sexual-misconduct-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in remarks on the House floor. \u201cIt has been an honor to serve with you all from both parties. I love this institution, as it still exemplifies what is best about our government. We are the people\u2019s House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed had previously announced he was not running for reelection in the November midterms.<\/p>\n<p>His resignation was first <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakeSherman\/status\/1524084351717109760?s=20&#038;t=ri2It8KQw6Btnv64fTq82A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> by Punchbowl News, adding that Reed would join Prime Policy Group, a public affairs firm in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>The House of Representatives Ethics Committee launched an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/house-ethics-committee-investigating-gop-rep-tom-reed-over-sexual-misconduct-allegation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investigation<\/a> concerning Reed in August after he was accused of sexual misconduct by a former lobbyist last March.<\/p>\n<p>Nicolette Davis accused Reed of putting his hands on her back and unhooking her bra during a 2017 outing at a pub with other lobbyists. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/investigations\/tom-reed-lobbyist-nicolette-davis\/2021\/03\/19\/10717562-84f3-11eb-8a67-f314e5fcf88d_story.html\">The Washington Post<\/a>, which first reported on the allegation, cited another person at the table who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The source reportedly confirmed that Reed had put his hand on Davis\u2019s back and was escorted from the table. The person claimed Reed was visibly intoxicated.<\/p>\n<p>In an initial statement to The Washington Post, Reed responded to the allegation through his office by saying: \u201cThis account of my actions is not accurate.\u201d He later publicly apologized to Davis and said his personal depiction of the event was irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst, I apologize to Nicolette Davis. Even though I am only hearing of this matter as stated by Ms. Davis in the article now, I hear her voice and will not dismiss her. In reflection, my personal depiction of this event is irrelevant. Simply put, my behavior caused her pain, showed her disrespect and was unprofessional. I was wrong, I am sorry, and I take full responsibility. I further apologize to my wife and kids, my family, the people of the 23rd District, my colleagues, and those who have supported me for the harm this caused them,\u201d said Reed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/states\/new-york\/albany\/story\/2021\/03\/21\/reed-apologizes-and-says-he-wont-challenge-cuomo-in-2022-1369184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> obtained by Politico.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecond, I want to share that this occurred at a time in my life in which I was struggling. Upon entering treatment in 2017, I recognized that I am powerless over alcohol. I am now approaching four years of that personal lifelong journey of recovery. With the support of my wife, kids and loved ones, professional help, and trust in a higher power, I continue that journey day-by-day. This is in no way an excuse for anything I\u2019ve done.
