The letter goes on to discuss concerns about the \u201cformula product shortages affecting American families from the essential shutdown of the Sturgis facility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe recall and shutdown affects affordability and availability of infant formula \u2014 several chain retailers are limiting the number of products per purchase to manage inventory and desperate families face skyrocketing costs through third-party sellers,\u201d the letter continues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The document also notes, \u201cInfant formulas are also not easily interchangeable: some infants develop allergies or sensitivities, and some infants require specific formulas based on medical conditions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After months of shortages, government officials and journalists are beginning to address the baby formula crisis publicly under mounting public pressure. Many of these public figures suggested it was a tragedy that funding was being directed to other issues when parents were struggling to feed their babies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTennessee parents are struggling to find baby formula. What is Joe Biden doing to help families?\u201d Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marshablackburn\/status\/1523757309566283776?s=11&#038;t=nFNKM5oeY0Y5GAigpn8ghQ\"><span>tweeted<\/span><\/a><span> Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou can\u2019t find baby formula in the United States right now but Congress is voting today to send $40 billion to Ukraine. Let\u2019s put America First for a change,\u201d Donald Trump Jr. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DonaldJTrumpJr\/status\/1524020227176079361\"><span>posted<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meghan McCain wrote a scathing article for the Daily Mail, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10802001\/MEGHAN-MCCAIN-Biden-administration-dragged-feet-shortage-life-sustaining-baby-formula.html\"><span>saying<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cIf America\u2019s supply of erectile dysfunction pills were at risk then our government would have snapped into action, but when it came to a mass shortage of life-sustaining baby formula this administration dragged its feet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Romney had previously vowed to send a letter to the FDA on the matter, which he followed through with Tuesday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m very concerned about [the shortage],\u201d Romney previously <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/white-house-fda-baby-formula_n_62797de0e4b0b7c8f087f399\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>, according to HuffPost. He said he is trying to understand \u201chow they could make a decision about safety that apparently didn\u2019t seem to include consideration about supply \u2014 because supply is also essential for the health of our children \u2014 and I can\u2019t see how badly they misjudged, apparently, the setting that we\u2019re in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Baby formula has been difficult to find since last summer amid supply chain issues that were affecting the food supply more broadly. This February, the problem became worse following recalls of Similac, Alimentum and EleCare brands from the Sturgis factory. At least four babies got sick and two died due to bacterial infection linked to that formula, which inspired the recall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The cause of deaths are still under investigation.<\/p>\n<p><span>FOX 29 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox29.com\/news\/baby-formula-shortage-brands-sold-out\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> that retail data firm Datasembly shows 40%-50% of major formula brands sold out last week in 26 states.
