To date, the U.S. has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/150-million-in-additional-u-s-military-assistance-for-ukraine\/\"><span>already<\/span><\/a><span> provided millions of dollars in humanitarian aid and $3.8 billion in arms and equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In his statement on Monday, Biden <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/05\/09\/statement-by-president-joe-biden-on-funding-for-covid-19-and-ukraine\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> that previous U.S. aid was being \u201cexhausted.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe need is also urgent,\u201d he said. \u201cI have nearly exhausted the resources given to me by a bipartisan majority in Congress to support Ukraine\u2019s fighters. This aid has been critical to Ukraine\u2019s success on the battlefield. We cannot allow our shipments of assistance to stop while we await further Congressional action.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Biden also asked Congress to move past COVID-19 funding for the moment, which had been coupled to the original spending plan, and prioritize Ukraine aid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0\u201cWe cannot afford delay in this vital war effort,\u201d he said. \u201cHence, I am prepared to accept that these two measures move separately, so that the Ukrainian aid bill can get to my desk right away.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) said that it was \u201cmore likely\u201d that the Senate would look at the spending bill next week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Many Democrats are still pushing for COVID-19 funds as well, with Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) claiming, \u201c We\u2019re going to have real problems this fall with COVID and it\u2019s a mistake not to have both together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition, Politico noted that the U.S. needed to fulfill a COVID-19 treatment pill contract with Pfizer, worth $5 billion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The proposed spending comes as inflation continues to plague Americans and gas prices hit all time highs, breaking records. On Tuesday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/markets\/gas-prices-hit-new-all-time-high\"><span>rose<\/span><\/a><span> to $4.374, a new record. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Biden has referred to rising gas prices as \u201cPutin\u2019s price hike\u201d even though they were rising prior to Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, and some estimate that Americans will spend thousands more on gas and groceries this year.
