Two Su-27s enter very low from the south \u2014 lower than the lighthouse on the island\u2019s southern point, while dropping infrared countermeasure flares.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 css-htz1a0\">A southern approach makes sense both because of the guidepost the lighthouse provides to line up on target and that more likely than not, Russian defenders on the island will be primarily focused on looking north and west toward the Ukrainian coastline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 css-htz1a0\">The Flankers toss what were possibly high-drag bombs at minimal altitude, scoring what appear to be direct hits on the island\u2019s main complex, buildings just above the pier, and on the eastern point. There are at least two major secondary explosions, suggesting a hit on ammunition and\/or fuel storage area, on the island\u2019s east end before a larger blast near the island\u2019s center.\u00a0From the limited albeit stunning angle we have of the attack, this was a very high-risk operation not just due to the threat from the enemy but from blast and fragmentation of the bombs striking the launching aircraft themselves.<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"image MuiBox-root css-1pxftiy\"><span class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-caption css-k6fpix\">Ukrainian bombs hit targets on occupied Snake Island after a low-level bombing run by Su-27s, leaving most of the island&#8217;s buildings destroyed. (<em>Ukrainian drone FLIR video screencap)<\/em>.<\/span><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 css-htz1a0\">Satellite footage confirmed fires and serious damage to Snake Island\u2019s buildings, suggesting the strikes occurred within the last day or two.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 css-htz1a0\">The strike comes amid a wave of Ukrainian attacks on Snake Island using TB2 drones. These targeted facilities, air defense systems, and one Russian landing craft attempting to unload a replacement Tor SAM launcher. You can read our coverage of those attacks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/ukraine-situation-report-tb2s-strike-russian-sam-carrying-landing-craft-at-snake-island\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 css-htz1a0\">The TB2 missions targeting low-altitude air defense systems, the ZU-23-2 gun emplacements, Tor missile launchers, and SA-13 Strela-10 infrared SAMs, make much more sense now as preparatory destruction of enemy air defenses before manned fighters brought the hammer down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 css-htz1a0\">It\u2019s also possible that this attack was considered an acceptable risk with the Project 1164 <em>Slava<\/em> class cruiser <em>Moskva <\/em>off the board since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/sinking-a-warship-is-a-truly-rare-event-in-modern-naval-warfare\">its sinking<\/a> in mid-April. The cruiser\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/russias-black-sea-flagship-has-exploded-off-ukraine\">S-300F SAM<\/a> system could have made a strike like this more dangerous if it was nearby and not already at the bottom of the Black Sea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 css-htz1a0\">The Su-27 is a born and bred interceptor and air superiority fighter with secondary ground-attack capabilities. It doesn&#8217;t have nearly the sophisticated systems found in most U.S. and NATO strike fighter aircraft. We know from Ukrainian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44877\/ukrainian-fighter-pilots-describe-their-desperate-air-war-against-russia\">pilots\u2019 accounts<\/a> earlier in the war that Su-27s have largely been used in an air-to-air role, but their longer range and payload make them a suitable fit for the Snake Island strike.\u00a0They could also defend themselves in the air if need be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 css-htz1a0\">At that speed and attack profile, it takes a high degree of skill just to get any bombs dead-on target. In this case, they appeared to do remarkably more than just that.
