Gavin Newsom (D-CA) now plans to ask the federal government instead for a $6 billion bailout to rescue the ailing facility in order to extend its life. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\"><\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2022-04-29\/california-promised-to-close-its-last-nuclear-plant-now-newsom-is-reconsidering\">According to the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>the one plant is responsible for around six percent of all power consumed by Californians, and is scheduled to be decommissioned in the year 2025 by its parent company, Pacific Gas and Electric. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The plant is showing its age and is in dire need of renovations such as earthquake-proofing and other environmental upgrades.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Gov. Newsom mentioned that &#8220;The requirement is by May 19 to submit an application, or you miss the opportunity to draw down any federal funds if you want to extend the life of that plant,&#8221; and that &#8220;we would be remiss not to put that on the table as an option.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Ironically, the state of California is the state most affected in recent years by power outages.
