Richard Burr, will grill nominee for EEOC Commissioner Kalpana Kotagal over her past political ties and public statements. Kotagal, a lawyer, represented a client named Liyah Brown who wanted to defund and abolish the police and said he believed they are a tool of white supremacy.<\/p>\n<p>Brown serves as the legal director of the Texas Civil Rights Project\u2019s (TCRP) Criminal Injustice Reform division and has made several statements in the past calling both police and prisons \u201cinstitutions of White supremacy rooted in chattel slavery.\u201d Brown also used to work for the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a liberal organization.<\/p>\n<p>The EEOC \u201cinvestigates complaints of job discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, disability, age (40 or older), or genetic information,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/youth\/about-eeoc-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to its website. The EEOC also works to \u201cprevent discrimination before it occurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Caller contacted Burr\u2019s office about Brown specifically and her past statements to which a committee aide responded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenator Burr has serious concerns about Kalpana Kotagal\u2019s qualifications to serve as an EEOC commissioner. Ms. Kotagal has not been fully forthcoming with the Committee when it comes to her radical political ties, previous public statements, and the approach she would take as a commissioner, if confirmed,\u201d a GOP HELP Committee aide told the Daily Caller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenate HELP Republicans intend to raise these questions at Tuesday\u2019s hearing, and expect thorough, transparent answers in response,\u201d the Committee aide added.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Missouri Sen. Mike Braun expressed his concerns with Kotagal before Tuesday\u2019s hearing as well, telling the Daily Caller she has a \u201cpattern\u201d of supporting policies that are discriminatory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf confirmed, Ms. Kotagal would be charged with enforcing our nation\u2019s employment discrimination laws, and she has demonstrated a pattern of support for an agenda of discrimination under the banner of \u2018equity\u2019 rather than for equality of opportunity, and voiced extreme positions that are out of step with most Americans,\u201d Braun said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7425875\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7425875\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Sen. (Photo by Greg Nash-Pool\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law360.com\/articles\/1302738\/liyah-brown-on-the-push-for-radical-reform-in-texas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interview<\/a> with LAW360 from 2020, Brown was asked about defunding the police, to which she responded by saying she is very \u201chopeful\u201d and said she believes the term \u201cdefund the police\u201d is not as \u201cscary\u201d as it was several years ago. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/12\/20\/mike-lee-eeoc-chai-feldblum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Mike Lee Blocked EEOC Nominee Who Believes Sexual Liberty Trumps The First Amendment)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very hopeful, for so many reasons. It\u2019s not even in my nature to be an optimist. But \u2026 these are not new ideas. These are not new concepts. These are not new tactics. They\u2019ve been workshopped by abolitionists for decades,\u201d Brown reportedly said. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2016\/04\/21\/republicans-scold-eeoc-for-massive-backlog-of-workplace-discrimination-cases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Republicans Scold EEOC For Massive Backlog Of Workplace Discrimination Cases)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though it\u2019s taken so long for this kind of conversation to enter the mainstream, it is in the mainstream. I don\u2019t think that reforms are achieved when it\u2019s just the directly impacted group trying to achieve them. Civil rights, voting rights, desegregation \u2014 I\u2019m not a person who believes that we moved in that direction just because black people [were pushing for it]. That this is a mainstream conversation, and that there\u2019s diversity of demographics in this conversation and a diversity of perspectives, makes me encouraged. \u2018Defund the police\u2019 doesn\u2019t sound as scary, I think, today as it might have sounded two years ago or five years ago,\u201d she continued, according to the interview.<\/p>\n<p>On TCRP\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.txcivilrights.org\/2020\/07\/30\/how-were-fighting-texas-racist-criminal-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>, Brown said there needs to be a total abolition of police and jails, claiming they are tied to white supremacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice and prisons are institutions of White supremacy rooted in chattel slavery. This grave historical truth warrants total abolition instead of mere tweaks for \u2018better\u2019 plantations and overseers. We reject the mass funneling of Black and Brown people into jails, prisons, juvenile, and immigration detention. We aim to reduce the harms of the criminal legal system while working towards a public safety agenda centered on crime prevention and on freedom. Long-term abolition includes many practical steps that can be taken now such as decriminalization, decarceration, and divestment,\u201d Brown wrote on her company\u2019s website in 2o2o.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Jones, the Founder of the American Accountability Foundation, told the Daily Caller that Kotagal has total control over who she represents and said Kotagal should apologize to law enforcement for representing Brown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKalpana Kotagal is a plaintiff\u2019s civil attorney, so she has complete control over who she represents. Kotagal needs to answer why she has represented Liyah Brown who calls the men and women of law enforcement \u2018white supremacists.\u2019 People can reasonably disagree about policing techniques but calling all police officers bigots is beyond the pale and inexcusable.
