Baier then played a clip of Esper\u2019s 2019 Senate confirmation hearing in which he said he would \u201cabsolutely\u201d resign if we was asked to engage in any misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are points in this book where you clearly write you had crossed that Rubicon, and yet you don\u2019t resign,\u201d Baier said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I would never do anything illegal, immoral, or unethical,\u201d Esper said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou clearly suggest you were being asked to,\u201d Baier pushed back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was being suggested by the president and we successfully pushed back on that,\u201d Esper said.<\/p>\n<p>Baier then asked whether he thought \u201cDonald Trump was a threat to democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that given the events of January 6th, given how he has undermined the election results, he incited people to come to D.C., stirred them that morning, and failed to call them off. To me, that threatens our democracy,\u201d Esper said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, yes?\u201d Baier asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else can you conclude, Bret?\u201d Esper said before saying he hopes Trump does not mount a 2024 bid. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/05\/donald-trump-allegedly-wanted-missile-attack-wipe-out-mexican-drug-cartel-mark-esper-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Trump Proposed Missile Attack To Wipe Out Mexican Drug Cartels, Mark Esper Claims)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that the Republican base can figure out that while President Trump pushed a lot of traditional Republican ideas,\u201d Esper said. \u201cThere are other candidates out there who could run that could do it without dividing the people, without creating such tension within the country, and do it by growing the base as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/09\/trump-esper-cartels-drugs-border-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trump<\/a> claimed he <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/09\/terminated-trump-fires-secretary-defense-mark-esper-twitter-reports-signed-letter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fired<\/a> Esper in November of 2020, though <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/06\/pentagon-trump-border-troops-esper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Esper\u2019s<\/a> office has pushed back and instead claimed Esper had <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/05\/donald-trump-mark-esper-defense-resign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prepared<\/a>\u00a0a resignation letter at the time.
