The bill would not apply to speech illegal under federal law such as inciting violence or harassment.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would apply to social media platforms with at least 50 million users and would allow private citizens to win judgments against censored views.<\/p>\n<p>Adam Candeub, a law professor from Michigan State University, testified in support of the bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe argued social media today forms the modern public square. However, the companies who control that square are nothing but \u2018political actors\u2019 who \u2018censor and silence those with whom they disagree,\u2019\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2022\/05\/09\/committee-passes-bill-to-block-social-media-from-censoring-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> the Ohio Capital-Journal.<\/p>\n<p>The bill is one of many proposed across at least\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leadershipconnect.io\/business\/2021\/04\/29\/tracking-proposed-social-media-legislation-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">16 states<\/a> nationwide following Florida\u2019s passing of a bill signed last year by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2022, DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/desantis-calls-for-special-session-that-will-address-threat-of-big-tech-censorship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called out<\/a> Big Tech\u2019s censorship of conservatives following the release of a new Heritage Foundation video that noted the vast disparity of censorship between Republican and Democratic House members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBig Tech has become the censorship arm of the Democratic Party and political left, silencing and de-platforming anyone who rejects the chosen left-wing narrative,\u201d DeSantis said on Twitter in December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSilicon Valley oligarchs shouldn\u2019t be the arbiters of free speech in our country.
