But the follow-up movie reportedly contains \u201cintense sequences of violence and action, frightening images and some language,\u201d which has some wondering why the film didn\u2019t get a higher age restriction, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/doctor-strange-2-likely-explanation-pg-13-rating-debate-1235142868\/\">reported<\/a> the Hollywood Reporter in a piece published Sunday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Likely Explanation for \u2018Doctor Strange 2\u2019 PG-13 Rating Amid Content\u00a0Debate <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eUt3xNDzVj\">https:\/\/t.co\/eUt3xNDzVj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/THR\/status\/1523396309167722497?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 8, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Some have argued the movie has scenes that were dark and involved \u201cgraphic violence\u201d that deserved a different film rating, while others called the criticism nonsense.\u00a0The outlet noted that what seems to be getting people upset stems from at \u201cleast three moments of disturbing, graphic violence involving cameos\u201d \u2014 but details were not disclosed in the piece.<\/p>\n<p>The Hollywood Reporter\u2019s Senior Staff Writer Ryan Parker said he ultimately decided the movie didn\u2019t warrant a higher age restrictions and explained why.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>No. Likely, the violence and horror elements were seen through the lens of being conducted by superheroes and supervillains, which is how parents taking their younger children to see the film would also likely interpret the images and action, thereby making PG-13 the appropriate choice. After all, the Classification and Ratings Administration (CARA) board is composed of an independent group of parents.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/columns\/doctor-strange-multiverse-of-madness-horror-pg13-rating-graphic-mpaa-1235258889\/\">Variety<\/a> Magazine\u2019s Senior Awards Editor Clayton Davis had a different opinion about the Motion Picture Association\u2019s film rating and said when asked by friends if they would take their kids to see it, he said \u201cI don\u2019t think I would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis said it\u2019s \u201cdebatable\u201d whether the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, directed by Sam Raimi, is the \u201cfranchise\u2019s first horror film,\u201d as\u00a0Marvel head Kevin Feige described it.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><em>It\u2019s debatable whether \u201cDoctor Strange\u201d is strictly a horror film or a superhero film with horror elements, but with brutal scenes of people getting cut in half, shocking jump scares, and a sequence that is a terrifying (albeit terrific) ode to Jack Nicholson in \u201cThe Shining,\u201d we can safely classify this entry as the most \u201cadult\u201d MCU outing yet.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>An IGN (Imagine Games Network) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/doctor-strange-2-viewers-debating-r-rating\">review<\/a> said \u201cfor better and worse,\u201d \u201cDoctor Strange\u201d is a Raimi film \u201cthrough and through.\u201d It explained that the \u201chorror element\u201d was a big elephant in the room for this film and that \u201cDoctor Strange\u201d isn\u2019t the only thing that goes \u201cbump in the night.\u201d It also asked if the movie was too scary for kids and noted the \u201chorror aspects\u201d helped the MCU movie get its PG-13.<\/p>\n<p>The debate raged on social media with both sides pointing out their thoughts as well.
