Wade, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/05\/03\/1096097236\/roe-wade-original-ruling-leak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NPR<\/a>. Chief Justice John Roberts confirmed the authenticity of the document the next morning while ordering the marshal of the court to investigate the leak, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tile.loc.gov\/storage-services\/service\/ll\/usrep\/usrep410\/usrep410113\/usrep410113.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roe v. Since abortion was illegal in Texas at the time, McCorvey, under the pseudonym of Jane Roe, told the press she was raped to increase her chances of receiving one, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/politics\/2013\/02\/norma-mccorvey-roe-v-wade-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vanity Fair<\/a> reported. McCorvey revealed the story was false during a 1987 television interview and it was never mentioned by her lawyers throughout her trial, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMcCorvey had claimed she was raped (falsely) in the hope that it would make it easier for her to get an abortion, but the issue of rape didn\u2019t come up at all in the Supreme Court\u2019s reasoning in the decision,\u201d Mary Ziegler, author of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Abortion-Law-America-Wade-Present\/dp\/1108498280\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abortion and the Law in America: Roe v. Wade to the Present<\/a>,\u201d said in an emailed statement to Check Your Fact.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/annenberg.usc.edu\/faculty\/randall-lake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Randall Lake<\/a>, an associate professor at the University of Southern California with expertise in gender and sexuality, concurred with Ziegler. He said in an email to Check Your Fact that the alleged rape \u201cwas not the basis of Jane Roe\u2019s suit, nor was it at all part of the SCOTUS decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A 1987 Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/lifestyle\/1987\/09\/09\/jane-roe-recants-rape-claim\/a3376cd5-a48b-4ce0-8085-669db0ad3d2f\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>, written soon after McCorvey\u2019s television admission, stated that \u201crape was never an issue in the Supreme Court case,\u201d and notes the plaintiff\u2019s lawyer, Sarah Weddington, confirmed that rape had no impact on the ruling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A post shared on Facebook claims Roe v.
