First time ever we can work with babies while still alive and prevent SIDS. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/70miO5lfLA\">https:\/\/t.co\/70miO5lfLA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Carmel Harrington (@CarmelHarring18) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CarmelHarring18\/status\/1523510578089971715?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 9, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Carmel Harrington, who has a PHD in Sleep Medicine from Sydney University in Australia, lost her two-year-old son Damien to SIDS in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>Now a study she has led has identified the first biochemical marker that could help detect babies more at risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) while they still live. \u201cAn apparently healthy baby going to sleep and not waking up is every parent\u2019s nightmare and until now there was absolutely no way of knowing which infant would succumb. But that\u2019s not the case anymore,\u201d Harrington asserted.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers led by Harrington identified Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) as the biochemical marker that could help solve SIDS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe study found BChE levels were significantly lower in babies who subsequently died of SIDS compared to living controls and other infant deaths,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schn.health.nsw.gov.au\/news\/articles\/2022\/05\/world-first-breakthrough-could-prevent-sids?fbclid=IwAR1qQx2XuS7V300Sv__psDV5n4KMBHl2ZXyMG3u2YTwgcTPYfWn-0syz6q0\">Sydney Children\u2019s Hospital Network<\/a> reported, adding, \u201cBChE plays a major role in the brain\u2019s arousal pathway and researchers believe its deficiency likely indicates an arousal deficit, which reduces an infant\u2019s ability to wake or respond to the external environment, causing vulnerability to SIDS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fauthors.elsevier.com%2Fsd%2Farticle%2FS2352396422002225&#038;data=05%7C01%7C%7Cd9ae251521d74c4a128708da2f648269%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637874405994891401%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&#038;sdata=tvFFDc9ZFpSFSR9UAIymDDBscN7nC1I%2FEmk6CyTsziA%3D&#038;reserved=0\">The Lancet\u2019s eBioMedicine<\/a>\u00a0analyzed BChE activity in 722 dried blood spots (DBS) taken at birth as part of the Newborn Screening Program. The study stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In recent years, the incidence of SIDS has been more than halved by public health campaigns however, despite this dramatic decline in incidence, SIDS remains the major cause of sudden and unexpected death in infants in western countries, contributing to almost 50% of all post-neonatal deaths.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The study explained that widespread current belief of the causes of SIDS rest on three simultaneous factors: \u201ca vulnerable infant, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/critical-period-psychology\">critical developmental period<\/a>\u00a0for homeostatic control and an exogenous stressor,\u201d adding, \u201cDespite intensive research over the past decades, identification of any specific vulnerability has remained elusive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrington stated, \u201cBabies have a very powerful mechanism to let us know when they are not happy. Usually, if a baby is confronted with a life-threatening situation, such as difficulty breathing during sleep because they are on their tummies, they will arouse and cry out. What this research shows is that some babies don\u2019t have this same robust arousal response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has long been thought to be the case, but up to now we didn\u2019t know what was causing the lack of arousal,\u201d she commented. \u201cNow that we know that BChE is involved we can begin to change the outcome for these babies and make SIDS a thing of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis discovery has opened up the possibility for intervention and finally gives answers to parents who have lost their children so tragically.
