Wade<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell shared the remark with USA Today in an article published on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the leaked opinion became the final opinion, legislative bodies \u2013 not only at the state level but at the federal level \u2013 certainly could legislate in that area,\u201d McConnell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/05\/06\/gop-avoids-abortion-ahead-potential-scotus-ruling-overturn-roe\/9631996002\/?gnt-cfr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if this were the final decision, that was the point that it should be resolved one way or another in the legislative process. So yeah, it\u2019s possible,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>During the interview, McConnell also made the Republican Party\u2019s view on abortion clear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith regard to the abortion issue, I think it\u2019s pretty clear where Senate Republicans stand,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd if and when the court makes a final decision, I expect everybody will be more definitive. But I don\u2019t think it\u2019s much secret where senator Republicans stand on that issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The minority leader\u2019s comments followed a leak of an early draft of a Supreme Court majority opinion revealed on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell was quick to release a statement following the leak to condemn the action, blaming the move on \u201cthe radical left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night\u2019s stunning breach was an attack on the independence of the Supreme Court,\u201d McConnell tweeted on Tuesday alongside a statement. \u201cBy every indication, this was yet another escalation in the radical left\u2019s ongoing campaign to bully and intimidate federal judges and substitute mob rule for the rule of law.\u2019<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Last night\u2019s stunning breach was an attack on the independence of the Supreme Court. By every indication, this was yet another escalation in the radical left\u2019s ongoing campaign to bully and intimidate federal judges and substitute mob rule for the rule of law. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wvigWvPqm7\">pic.twitter.com\/wvigWvPqm7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Leader McConnell (@LeaderMcConnell) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeaderMcConnell\/status\/1521492724603658244?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 3, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Democrats were quick to oppose the content of the draft instead of speaking against the source of the Supreme Court leak. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) released a statement following the leaked draft to attack Alito\u2019s reported words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis monstrous draft decision is a sweeping and severe restriction of Americans\u2019 rights. With it, Trump, McConnell and Republicans in Congress have assaulted privacy, precedent and the Constitution,\u201d Pelosi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.speaker.gov\/newsroom\/5322-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake no mistake: by striking down\u00a0<i>Roe v. Wade<\/i>, the Court would pave the way for Republicans to obliterate even more of our freedoms.\u00a0 As drafted, Justice Alito\u2019s argument \u2014 that women are not entitled to basic human rights today because they have been denied those rights for generations \u2014 is alarming and extremist. This draft ruling offers a dangerous blueprint for future assaults on some of our most cherished rights, which are rooted in the long-held constitutional right to privacy,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Politico first published the leak on Monday evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hold that\u00a0<i>Roe<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Casey<\/i>\u00a0must be overruled,\u201d Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the document, labeled as the \u201cOpinion of the Court.\u201d \u201cIt is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people\u2019s elected representatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The leaked draft also shows that Alito called\u00a0<em>Roe\u00a0<\/em>wrong from the start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>Roe<\/i>\u00a0was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences.
