Despite its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/05\/why-russia-has-failed-to-win-the-battle-for-donbas\/\">renewed offensive<\/a>, Moscow has failed to achieve anything significant in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/04\/ukraine-is-getting-more-powerful-weapon-to-fight-russia-in-donbas\/\">Donbas<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Back and Forth\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>The Ukrainian military has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/05\/putins-problem-russia-is-blowing-up-bridges-to-stop-ukraines-counterattack\/\">counterattacking<\/a>, especially in the vicinity of Kharkiv, Izium, and Kherson, in an attempt to frustrate the Russian offensive and reclaim lost territory.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KyivIndependent\/status\/1522845398393577472\/photo\/1\"><span>claimed<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0that as of Saturday, Ukrainian forces have killed approximately 25,100\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/04\/15\/ukraine-facial-recognition-warfare\/\"><span>Russian troops<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0(and wounded approximately thrice that number), destroyed 199 fighter, attack, and transport jets, 155 helicopters, 1,122 tanks, 509 artillery pieces, 2,713 armored personnel carriers, 172\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44479\/the-truth-about-russias-terrifying-tos-1a-thermobaric-rocket-launchers-now-in-ukraine\"><span>Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS)<\/span><\/a><span>, 11 boats and cutters, 1,934 vehicles and fuel tanks, 84 anti-aircraft batteries, 341 unmanned aerial systems, 38 special equipment platforms, such as bridging vehicles, and four mobile Iskander ballistic missile systems, and 90 cruise missiles shot down by the Ukrainian air defenses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In its daily update of the war, the British Ministry of Defense focused on the materiel losses that the Russian military has been having and what that might mean for the long-term Russian military capability. The estimate narrowed down to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/05\/javelin-strike-russias-t-90m-tank-is-died-a-horrible-death-in-ukraine\/\">T-90M<\/a>, the most advanced operational tank in the Russian military\u2019s arsenal\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/04\/why-russias-new-t-14-armata-tank-isnt-fighting-in-ukraine\/\">T-14 Armata<\/a> hasn\u2019t seen any fighting.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAt least one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/russia-loses-its-most-advanced-t-90m-tank-direct-hit-kharkiv-report-3495552\"><span>T-90M<\/span><\/a><span>, Russia\u2019s most advanced tank, has been destroyed in fighting. The T-90M was introduced in 2016 and includes improved armour, an upgraded gun and enhanced satellite navigation systems. Approximately 100 T-90M tanks are currently in service amongst Russia\u2019s best equipped units, including those fighting in Ukraine. The system\u2019s upgraded armour, designed to counter anti-tank weaponry, remains vulnerable if unsupported by other force elements,\u201d the British Military Intelligence stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/04\/putins-disaster-sanctions-are-smashing-russias-economy-or-not\/\">sanctions<\/a> combined with the heavy materiel losses are pushing the Russian military decades back in terms of conventional deterrence and capabilities.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe conflict in Ukraine is taking a heavy toll on some of Russia\u2019s most capable units and most advanced capabilities. It will take considerable time and expense for Russia to reconstitute its armed forces following this conflict. It will be particularly challenging to replace modernised and advanced equipment due to sanctions restricting Russia\u2019s access to critical microelectronic components,\u201d the British Military Intelligence assessed.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Nuclear Scare\u00a0<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>To be sure, the Russian military still packs the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-60564123\"><span>largest nuclear arsenal<\/span><\/a><span> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/04\/would-russia-dare-use-tactical-nuclear-weapons-in-ukraine\/\">world<\/a>. And since the war started going bad for Russia, the Kremlin and those close to it have been increasingly touting the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/russia-nuclear-weapons-231750731.html\"><span>Russian nuclear capability<\/span><\/a><span> and how it could be employed to destroy the West.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019ve decried the escalation rhetoric by the Russians now numerous times when it comes to nuclear weapons. And it\u2019s not the behavior of a responsible nuclear power, to engage in that kind of rhetoric. And I would just tell you that, as I said many times before, we monitor this every single day, we are comfortable and confident that our strategic deterrent posture is well placed and robust enough to defend the homeland, as well as our allies and partners,\u201d Pentagon Press Secretary John F. There\u2019s no reason to bring it to that level.
