The mask requirement remains more than two months after the city dropped its indoor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/news\/what-you-need-know-about-mask-requirements#:~:text=Please%20note%3A%20The%20City&#039;s%20indoor,%2C%20museums%2C%20and%20entertainment%20venues.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mask mandate<\/a>. Some parents are frustrated by the inconsistency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Enough is enough. You can go to City Hall or catch a game at the Garden without masking, but our kids are mandated to wear masks all day in school while trying to learn,&#8221; Joy McDonald, the mother of a student in the district, told the <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em>. McDonald worries that mask mandates are stunting students academically and socially, adding, &#8220;It&#8217;s not fair to impose this on our youth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>School districts across the country dropped their mask mandates in 2021. Even holdout districts in deep-blue cities such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/18\/us\/los-angeles-schools-mask-mandate.html#:~:text=Coronavirus-,Los%20Angeles%20schools%20will%20stop%20requiring%20masks,agreement%20with%20the%20teachers&#039;%20union.&#038;text=The%20Los%20Angeles%20Unified%20School,union%2C%20the%20district%20announced%20Friday.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2022\/03\/11\/dc-public-schools-lift-mask-mandate-many-charters-keep-requirement-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington, D.C.,<\/a> dropped mandates this spring. Researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/new-study-finds-covid-transmission-in-schools-is-extremely-rare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">determined<\/a> as early as January 2021 that COVID transmission in school settings is &#8220;extremely rare.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Boston Public Schools shut its doors for more than a year during the coronavirus pandemic, resuming in-person instruction in September 2021. A Boston Public Schools spokesman told the <em>Free Beacon <\/em>that, pursuant to city guidance, the mask mandate will remain in place until Boston has fewer than 10 new COVID cases per 100,000 residents each day for a week. Once the city hits that mark, the schools will adopt a &#8220;mask optional&#8221; policy.<\/p>\n<p>Boston&#8217;s vaccine mandate for public employees caused controversy in the district earlier this year. Two Boston Public Schools teachers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/02\/15\/metro\/two-boston-teachers-sue-union-over-vaccine-mandate-agreement-with-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued<\/a> their union in February after top brass voted to abide by the citywide order to vaccinate public workers without giving teachers notice. Hundreds of district employees\u2014including many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/01\/26\/metro\/mostly-educators-color-could-face-termination-due-vaccine-mandate-boston-teachers-union-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minority<\/a> teachers\u2014faced termination due to the city order.
