Biography of Golf\u2019s Most Colorful Superstar,\u201d on his website, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/firepitcollective.com\">Firepit Collective<\/a>.\u201d The book is due out on May 17, coinciding with Mickelson\u2019s potential defense of his 2021 PGA Championship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to a source with direct access to the documents, Mickelson had gambling losses totaling more than $40 million in the four-year period (2010\u201314) that was scrutinized,\u201d Shipnuck wrote. \u201cIn those prime earning years, his income was estimated to be just north of $40 million a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Phil Mickelson Reportedly Piled Up $40 Million In Gambling Losses Over a 4-Year Span <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rrh5pUz9Y5\">https:\/\/t.co\/rrh5pUz9Y5<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4fybYnmKB4\">pic.twitter.com\/4fybYnmKB4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Barstool Sports (@barstoolsports) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/barstoolsports\/status\/1522324025690804227?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 5, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Shipnuck, a former Sports Illustrated golf writer, cited documents from government auditors who did a \u201cforensic\u201d analysis of Mickelson\u2019s finances during the period in which he was involved with professional gambler Billy Walters, who gave Mickelson insider stock tips.\u00a0Mickelson was not accused of any wrongdoing, but had to pay back about $1 million in stock profits. Walters \u00a0was fined $10 million and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2017\/07\/27\/phil-mickelsons-pal-gets-5-years-fined-10m-for-insider-trading\/\">sentenced to five years in prison<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mickelson, 51, has kept a low profile since early February when he courted controversy by signing on for a Saudi-backed golf tour. Mickelson angered many in the golf world with his comments on the Kingdom\u2019s horrific human rights record, including the killing of Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi.<\/p>\n<p>The Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour was launched by fellow golf great Greg Norman with funding from Saudi royals. Mickelson helped recruit golfers to join the tour, which the PGA sees as direct competition.\u00a0The first LIV Golf Invitational series is set to tee off June 9-11 outside London.<\/p>\n<p>The Telegraph reported that Mickelson is getting $30 million up front and must appear in eight events during the LIV Golf Invitational series. It is not known who will take part in the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Mickelson, known to fans as \u201cLefty,\u201d\u00a0has won 45 PGA tour events, including\u00a0three Masters, two PGA championships and one Open. Last year\u2019s PGA victory made\u00a0Mickelson the oldest golfer to ever win a major championship.<\/p>\n<p>Shipnuck, who wrote that Mickelson\u2019s lavish lifestyle remains legendary \u2013 including getting multiple mansions, a plane and a genuine T Rex skull for a birthday present \u2013 said he still roots for the golfer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is something Shakespearean about Mickelson\u2019s arc,\u201d Shipnuck wrote on his blog. \u201cHe had it all, or so it seemed, but greed and vanity and recklessness (and perhaps desperation) cost him everything, at least in the short-term.
