Golden State politicians doubled down on the issue of abortion following a leaked draft of the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to potentially overturn the landmark case Roe v. Wade.<\/p>\n<p>Following Politico\u2019s release of the court\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billStatusClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB1142\"> 98 page opinion<\/a>, Democrats introduced a constitutional amendment to salvage abortion rights in California on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Gavin Newsom (D), Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon announced the proposal following the leak. Atkins held a press conference along with other female legislators at the State Capitol in Sacramento to talk about how California can lead the way on abortion rights.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cI\u2019m making sure that the Constitutional Amendment gets on the ballot for November,\u201d said Atkins.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A reversal in Roe v. Wade would allow states to make their own abortion laws. Additionally, voters must approve constitutional amendments by referendum. Democrats say the amendment will go on the voting ballot for November\u2019s midterm elections. The irony is constitutional scholars have admitted the \u201cright to abortion\u201d is not explicit in the United States Constitution and Atkins made it clear the \u201cright to choose\u201d was also not in the California State Constitution.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cCalifornia has long recognized the fundamental rights of privacy and control over one\u2019s own body,\u201d stated Atkins. \u201cNow we are going to make sure that right is in our Constitution and I will be introducing a Constitutional Amendment that will make it crystal clear that reproductive rights in America are included and specifically abortion is protected.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019ve been here before &#038; know where it leads. We will not step back. Additionally, Democrat State Representative and Chair of the Legislative Women\u2019s Caucus Cristina Garcia stated the body already introduced a package of bills to be a few steps ahead in the country.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cFor me it\u2019s a matter of life and death,\u201d said Garcia. \u201cIt\u2019s important for California\u00a0 to keep enough hope for everybody and that we show access to our marginalized communities here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One specific bill , <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB1142\">SB 1142<\/a>, would establish California as a sanctuary state for abortion.
