John Cornyn introduced a bill on Wednesday calling for increased security for U.S. Supreme Court Justices and their family members following a leak regarding a pending court ruling that could overturn <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornyn.senate.gov\/node\/6688\">bill<\/a>, known as the \u201cSupreme Court Police Parity Act,\u201d comes following potential threats and a growing number of protests against conservative justices following the leak of Justice Samuel Alito\u2019s draft opinion on the pending abortion-rights case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just an attack against the independence of the judiciary. This risks violence against members of the Supreme Court and their families,\u201d Cornyn said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornyn.senate.gov\/node\/6688\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After this week&#8217;s SCOTUS leak, a focus has been placed on the security of the Justice\u2019s families who could face threats to their safety.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>I introduced a bill to ensure Justices and their families are protected from those who seek to harm them.<br \/>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BGfsSApCsn\">https:\/\/t.co\/BGfsSApCsn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Senator John Cornyn (@JohnCornyn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnCornyn\/status\/1522203911205052417?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 5, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI introduced a piece of legislation to enhance the authorities of the Supreme Court law enforcement agencies to provide protective details for the judges and their families, who\u2019ve already been threatened with violence,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The senator added that threats against justices are an attempt to intimidate and threaten those serving in the nation\u2019s highest court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we deal in these matters on a daily basis, to make that kind of threat to the Supreme Court is an attempt to intimidate the Justices and a threat to judicial independence,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would provide Supreme Court justices and family members with 24-hour security protection.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Cornyn\u2019s legislation would extend arrest authority to the Supreme Court Police when individuals interfere with the performance of a justice\u2019s official duties and create a criminal penalty for those who obstruct or impede Supreme Court Police in the performance of its functions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe events of the past week have intensified the focus on Supreme Court Justices\u2019 families, who are unfortunately facing threats to their safety in today\u2019s increasingly polarized political climate,\u201d Cornyn said.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cWe must act to ensure Justices and their families are protected from those who wish to cause them harm by extending Supreme Court police security to family members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new legislation also comes as a liberal group is reportedly planning protests at the homes of six conservative justices next week.<\/p>\n<p>The group Ruth Sent Us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/leftist-groups-direct-protestors-to-descend-upon-supreme-court-justices-homes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">listed<\/a> the street names where each justice supposedly lives with their families: Amy Coney Barrett, John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, and Neil Gorsuch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019d like to join or lead a peaceful protest, let us know,\u201d the activist group said, adding in another message, \u201cOur 6-3 extremist Supreme Court routinely issues rulings that hurt women, racial minorities, LGBTQ+ and immigrant rights. We must rise up to force accountability using a diversity of tactics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The leak was first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/02\/supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-00029473\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a>\u00a0by Politico on Monday evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hold that\u00a0<i>Roe<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Casey<\/i>\u00a0must be overruled,\u201d Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the document, labeled as the \u201cOpinion of the Court.\u201d \u201cIt is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people\u2019s elected representatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The leaked draft also shows that Alito called\u00a0<em>Roe\u00a0<\/em>wrong from the start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>Roe<\/i>\u00a0was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue,\u00a0<i>Roe<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Casey<\/i>\u00a0have enflamed debate and deepened division,\u201d Alito presented in the opinion draft.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Texas Republican Sen.
