Mitt Romney said former President Donald Trump is \u201cvery likely\u201d to be the 2024 Republican presidential nominee if he chooses to run.<\/p>\n<p>The senator, who voted twice to convict the former president in his impeachment trials, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/05\/trump-influence-over-gop-elections-00030161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> Politico in a Wednesday interview that Trump continues to hold firm support in the party, particularly after Trump endorsed Republican Ohio Senate candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/03\/jd-vance-wins-ohio-senate-primary-tim-ryan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.D. Vance<\/a> shortly before his primary victory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t delude myself into thinking I have a big swath of the Republican Party,\u201d Romney said to Politico. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to imagine anything that would derail his support. So if he wants to become the nominee in \u201924, I think he\u2019s very likely to achieve that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s the leader of the party, that\u2019s clear,\u201d he added. \u201cIf he decides to run, he will become the nominee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/03\/trump-backed-candidates-win-big-ohio-primaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trump-endorsed House candidates<\/a> Max Miller, Madison Gesiotto Gilbert and J.R. Majewski defeated their rivals in their Tuesday races, Politico reported. Vance trailed behind rivals Josh Mandel and Mike Gibbons prior to Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/15\/trump-endorses-jd-vance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">endorsement<\/a> April 15.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7423723\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7423723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo by Alex Wong\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Retiring Republican Ohio Sen. Rob Portman said Trump\u2019s endorsement mattered for Vance\u2019s victory in the primary, according to Politico.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you the endorsement was going to matter. And it did,\u201d Portman said, according to the outlet. \u201cHe has a very high approval rating among Republican primary voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Romney, the former 2012 Republican presidential nominee, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/24\/mitt-romney-donald-trump-win-republican-nomination-president-runs-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stated<\/a> in 2021 that Trump would attain the Republican nomination if he decided to run, adding he would continue to play a major role in the party. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/26\/romney-anti-trump-republicans-fundraise-cheney-reelection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Romney, Other Anti-Trump Republicans To Fundraise For Cheney Re-Election Bid)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expect he will continue playing a role. I don\u2019t know if he\u2019ll run in 2024 or not. But if he does, I\u2019m pretty sure he will win the nomination,\u201d Romney said in a New York Times-DealBook virtual <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dealbook\/status\/1364368036120190977\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interview<\/a>. \u201cI look at the polls, and the polls show that among the names being floated as potential contenders in 2024, if you put President Trump in there among Republicans, he wins in a landslide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A 2022 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/27\/donald-trump-wins-cpac-straw-poll-second-straight-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">straw poll<\/a> found that Trump holds strong support among Republicans and conservatives, earning 59% support while Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came in second with 28%. The former president has <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/09\/really-happy-trump-2024-presidential-run\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hinted<\/a> at potentially running for re-election on several occasions by answering that people will be \u201cvery happy\u201d with a future announcement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Utah Sen.
