That strategy backfired when the company had to do layoffs months after launching the fan website Tudum. Now the company is facing public outcry that a number of minority employees lost their jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/04\/28\/netflix-layoffs-tudum-editorial\/amp\/?guccounter=1\"><span>TechCrunch<\/span><\/a><span>, the company laid off editorial staff from its in-house publication Tudum only five months after launching the new venture. More than ten writers tweeted about being let go, including an editorial manager. The publication indicated that 25 people in Netflix\u2019s marketing department were affected by the decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A Netflix spokesperson told the outlet, \u201cOur fan website Tudum is an important priority for the company.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt is worth mentioning that Netflix actively recruited Black women and people of color just to lay them off MONTHS later without a second thought,\u201d journalist Monique Judge shared on Twitter. \u201cDon\u2019t brag about being inclusive when you treat your \u2018diversity\u2019 hires like they are disposable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Affected staff \u201cwere full-time, part-time or on contract. Most of them had just been given promotions the month prior to lay-offs,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/madamenoire.com\/1313902\/tudum-layoffs-netflix\/\"><span>according to<\/span><\/a><span> Madame Noire. The publication noted that employees \u201cwere only offered two weeks of severance pay.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNetflix recruited me seven months ago only to lay me and a bunch of other talented people off today. I\u2019m going to take time off to just exist, so please get in touch if you\u2019ll have editing and content strategy opportunities open after August,\u201d one woman tweeted along with her contact information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWell. I just was laid off from a significant contract originally intended through August so I\u2019m looking for stable work\u2026 and rent. I need rent,\u201d Nichole Perkins <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tnwhiskeywoman\/status\/1519754133158473729?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1519754133158473729%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.npr.org%2F2022%2F04%2F29%2F1095642535%2Fnetflix-promised-secure-jobs-at-tudum-now-one-of-its-teams-has-been-laid-off\"><span>tweeted<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One ex-Tudum employee told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/04\/29\/1095642535\/netflix-promised-secure-jobs-at-tudum-now-one-of-its-teams-has-been-laid-off\"><span>NPR<\/span><\/a><span>: \u201cThey went very out of their way to hire high level journalists of color who have quite a bit of name recognition and a lot of experience and talent. In some ways, they were just buying clout to lend credibility to their gambit\u2026We were courted pretty aggressively.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey sold us on the most amazing thing that you could want as a culture journalist or entertainment journalist,\u201d the former staffer continued. \u201cThey just sold something that seemed impossible anywhere else\u2026But the biggest selling point was the pay\u2026People upended their lives for this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The streaming service made headlines when it admitted to losing 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2022, marking its first subscriber loss in more than a decade. The company expects to lose 2 million subscribers globally in Q2.
