Wade<\/em> case which declared a Constitutional right to abortion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">Alito was to take part in a \u00a0judicial conference set to begin on Thursday in Nashville, Tennessee. Supreme Court spokeswoman Patricia McCabe did not say why Alito canceled when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/us-supreme-courts-alito-cancels-conference-appearance-after-abortion-ruling-leak-2022-05-04\/\">asked by Reuters<\/a>, but an investigation into the leak is ongoing and some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/leftist-groups-direct-protestors-to-descend-upon-supreme-court-justices-homes\">leftists have called for protests<\/a> and even violence against the five justices who signed onto Alito\u2019s draft opinion.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">\u201cSeriously, shout out to whoever the hero was within the Supreme Court who said \u2018f*** it! Let\u2019s burn this place down,\u2019\u201d tweeted Ian Millhiser, a senior correspondent at the far-left news site Vox following the leak.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">Twitter was flooded with vitriol against the Alito and the other four justices who reportedly concurred with his opinion, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. Chief Justice John Roberts, nominally a member of the court\u2019s conservative wing, reportedly did not sign the opinion. On Wednesday, the activist group that calls itself \u201cRuth Sent Us\u201d urged protesters to visit \u201cthe\u00a0homes of the six extremist justices, three in Virginia and three in Maryland.\u201d\u00a0The group\u2019s website listed the street names, but not numbers, where each justice lives.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">New: Justice Samuel Alito, the author of the leaked draft abortion ruling that would overturn Roe v. It was unclear if those appearances had been canceled.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">The leak of the draft stunned the nation and reignited the long-running debate about abortion. The opinion would decide the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/supct\/cert\/19-1392\">Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization <\/a><\/em>\u00a0case, a challenge to a Mississippi law greatly restricting the federal right to abortion granted by the <em>Roe<\/em> decision. Alito wrote that <em>Roe<\/em>\u00a0and a subsequent case, <em>Planned Parenthood v. Casey<\/em>, which upheld <em>Roe<\/em>, both must be overturned, and the right to allow, deny, or restrict the right to an abortion must reside with states.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">\u201c<em>Roe<\/em>\u00a0was egregiously wrong from the start,\u201d the 98-page opinion states. \u201cWe hold that <em>Roe<\/em> and <em>Casey<\/em> must be overruled. The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">Roberts has ordered an investigation into the leak, which many suspect was done to put pressure on justices to change their mind before formally releasing their decision in the case, which is expected to happen in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">\u201cThe leak of the Supreme Court draft opinion on <em>Roe<\/em> is a dangerous obstruction of justice,\u201d Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, said in a statement. \u201cAnd, it could very well lead to intimidation and violence directed at Supreme Court justices.
